The St. Joe loss can in part, I think, be attributed to budget woes at Loyola. The team arrived Thursday night after 7pm and then went to the gym for practice. I know I just arrived myself and saw them come into the lobby. Then they got up and played a 1:30 pm game. They had a slow start down 10 to 2, fought back and then fell back again. Someone at the game said Doyle looked sluggish. Shots did not fall. I asked other teams about when they arrived and lets just say, most arrived a day earlier and were fully rested. I know there have been significant budget cuts at Loyola as a whole and that included athletics and men's basketball. So how do you make up a 10% after the fact cut? You leave one day later than is prudent to save money. This Marriott is not cheap. The restaurant buffet breakfast is $28.50 per person. The team took the class route and included the walk ons and an injured Matt Chastain. In my opinion had alums opened their wallets a little there could have been a more normal travel schedule. I may be all wrong on this but it sure makes sense.
After today's win, the Ramblers get a day of rest and don't play until Monday. Coach Moser is taking the team on a day St.Thomas bay cruise along with snorkeling and swimming and then a nice dinner. Well deserved in my opinion. These young men and the coaches work hard.
So, if you want to help out write a check to the athletic department for $10, $15,$25 or more and mark it men's basketball. I know the coach is out their fund raising as well and trying to supplement his stripped down budget. He just had his second annual silent auction party to raise funds.
Enough said, write that check today. Then you can complain all you want with a clear conscience.
