Coach Moser gets 100% credit for the laugher (of our style of play) against NIU tonight.

NIU played their many big men. They got the boards and that was the difference in the game.

All year long Coach Moser has chosen the small lineup, although he has the height on the bench.

He has chosen NOT to develope LU’s big men: King or Johnson. When either has a good few minutes, they sit the next game.

Osbourne has been used sparingly.

Instead, Moser has chose to go with an undersized center (forward O’Leary – who does his best work at forward) and an undersized power forward (6-5 Christian Thomas).

LU has not played 2 forwards with the “center.” Instead we go with guards who do not rebound at small forward, where Christian Thomas could be effective, but never plays.

And when we need points he sticks with his #1 non-scoring favorite, Joe Crisman, & gives minutes to non-scoring, non-passing 5-10 walk on guard, London Dokubo.

The coach recruits well (although he does not fill our whole roster) but he does not use the big players he recruits. He goes with experience (whether good or bad) rather than size, talent, & potential.

We saw a big team tonight, but nothing like the teams we are going to see in the MVC. The Coach couldn’t handle NIU. If the Coach doesn’t change, & I doubt he will, we will never be ready for MVC play.

It appears we have the return of Will Rey, the midget coach who played midget lineups (6-10 Bernie Salte sat until Rey was fired & then in his final year, with the new coach, he led the team in rebounding, shooting, scoring, & was the 2nd best shot blocker in the LU record books). Rey was clearly the worst coach in LU history.

Milton Doyle is a great player, but without big men playing with him to rebound and play defense, it really means nothing.

Cody got in the game early, took a bad shot and returned immediately to the bench. King took his spot and lasted a short stint before returning to the bench. Neither were seen again. I'll venture a guess that they don't see the floor in the next game.

This probably isn't the best time to jump on coach, but I, for one, am getting tired of his antics on the sideline. It's distracting to the team and it may be why they seem to lack floor leadership and display so little confidence. It's fine for practice, but once the game begins, if you've taught the team what they need to know, you don't have to be half way out on the floor yelling and waving arms. You have to have confidence in the players you recruited and taught. You have to have confidence in yourself that you've prepared them well enough to do the job on their own. I know it's not just Porter. I hate the way almost all coaches now are taking the game away from the players. But go back and look at some old tapes of John Wooden. You couldn't find a more competitive guy, but his coolness and restraint set the tone for a lot of outstanding teams.

WOODEN ?? You could tell when he got perturbed or excited when he uncrossed his legs and sat up a bit straighter--Never had to yell as his teams learned well from a great coach--True Story , guys !!!

The game this evening should Never have been blown--NEVER !! If ever a team was ready to be blown away, it was NIU--BUT when we left the THREE shooter WIDE open FOUR times I knew the "jig was up" --Coaching ???

Great post, Scream. Your reference to John Wooden was perfect.

A lot of college coaches are now micro-managing the game from the bench, but I think Moser is guiltier than most.

I think the best thing for him to do the next time Loyola has a lead at halftime is to stay in the locker room until the game is over and read a book on how to relax.

Not that it is defending Porter, but he wasn't the worst of the coaches there yesterday.

The NIU coaches were hootin' and hollerin' all game long. They even chose to yell out as LU was taking free throws. Even my wife said "That is entirely classless."
