I went to the game, and it was pretty much what I expected. Starting 5 was as predicted, and Ingram, as predicted, was the first sub. Rajala, as predicted, is not ready to contribute; he didn't see the floor until the last 90 seconds. One surprise was that London Dokubo only played 1 minute as well.
Doyle started at the point, and did a credible job. It didn't look like his shoulder was bothering him. His patented clockwise spin move was in midseason form. Earl Peterson was his backup at point, and he looked pretty good; likes to drive to the basket. He turned an ankle the first half, but came back and was moving okay. Montel James looked very good. He is the key Rambler, as he is the only player 6'7" or taller who will be in the regular rotation.
The returnees, Crisman, Thomas and Turk, looked, unsurprisingly, like last year's versions of Crisman, Thomas and Turk, with Turk maybe looking a bit improved. Turk hit 2 consecutive 3s early in the 2d half that were sweet.
Ingram moves well and is athletic. He missed 2 or 3 bunnies but he's going to be a good one. Richardson looked a little mechanical and tentative, but has a nice stroke on his freebies. Knuth also converted both his free throws, but didn't do anything else to impress.
It was nice to see the Ramblers get out and run some. I hope Porter continues to fast break, but I'm afraid when the games count he'll revert to oxen ball. Our defense was solid on the perimeter, but we got outrebounded, which will be the major problem all year.
All in all, it was a nice comeback victory. My fear is that our lack of height will be our Achille's heel all year, and doom us to another losing season.
