San Jose State Spartans (2-4) vs Loyola Chicago Ramblers (1-6) – 1:00pm CST, Acrisure Arena, Palm Springs, CA

The second game of the Acrisure Invitational opens this afternoon as Loyola Chicago meets with last season’s first round NIT opponent, San Jose State.

Yesterday in game-1, the Ramblers and Northern Iowa Panthers met for the first time since Loyola Chicago left the MVC. UNI took a 72-51 win over Loyola. The game was all but decided during the first 5 minutes and before the first media timeout. At half, the Ramblers found themselves down by nearly 20 again. Each game and method of losing continues to be like Groundhog’s Day, and thru the season’s first 7 games we have yet to see any signs of life or improved play from this squad.

No quotes from coach Valentine post-game.

Yesterday morning San Jose State fell to Tulsa in a lopsided 81-51 loss.

San Jose State sits a 2-4 overall and won its last two games against Bethesda and Southern U on its home court. The Spartans are 2-4 in non-conference playand has a 0-4 record against opponents over .500. The Spartans are efficient from the field, shooting 49.7 percent which ranks 54th in the NCAA. They also average 75.0 points per game, 3.3 fewer points than the 78.3 Loyola Chicago gives up.

Looking at their lineup, junior 6-1 guard, Colby Garland is a top-50 scorer in the nation, averaging nearly 20ppg and shooting 63.1 percent from the field. Garland gets a huge workload and many touches per game, and the majority of his points come from within the paint and FT line. Additional possible threats are 6-8 F Yaphet Moundi, who averages nearly a double-double – 11.2ppg, 9.5reb – 6-0 G Jermaine Washington 11.2ppg, and 6-4 sharpshooting guard Ben Roseborough 10.8 ppg who does his work from three and hitting nearly 3 per game (.42.5% from 3). Other than 2024-25 returnees Sadraque Nganga and Jermaine Washington, this is another brand new team with nearly a full roster turnover whom the Ramblers are playing.

Tim Miles has been leading SJSU for the last five seasons. He holds a 55-83 record.

San Jose State Probable Starters – 6-1 G Colby Garland, 6-8 F Yaphet Moundi, 6-0 G Jermaine Washington, 6-4 G Ben Roseborough, 6-10 G Sadraque Nganga.

Loyola Probable Starters – Rubin, Houinsou, Love III, Moore, Tavarez

COME ON! Let's get this and get ready for a little win streak with Central Michigan and Princeton at home. Amos to hit the court soon. Find any mojo we can heading into that San Fran trip!

Sigh. I’m just not sure what the 2025 version of Justin Moore gives you. He’s still got decent court vision, but he moves like he’s stuck in mud. Can’t get past anybody, can’t elevate, provides no spacing whatsoever because he can’t/won’t spot up, constantly loses his guy off screens and can’t contest when he catches up. And then today he was turning the ball over after pounding the ball until 5 seconds left on shot clock (although I’m guessing that was more just one of Drew’s trademark brilliant strategies).

I’m not sure they have any great options to replace him, but him as your primary playmaker is a dead end, because he can’t make any plays right now.

Pts off TOs 31 to 6
Pts in Pt 26 to 22
FastBrk 5 to 1

It was actually a game entering the half.
Not long out of the half, rudderless play.
Anything learned from this tournament?

I think all one can say at this point is a fair amount of talent moved on from the program. Miles staying was big as was Love, gotta think both move on after this season. I do think it is worth pointing out that Drew has a very aggressive coaching personality and I wonder if, in this age of pay to play, it has some negative repercussions. It is clear that his style is not working with this group, hopefully it doesn't turn into an epic disaster and they can find a way to right the ship. I mean, I have to hand it to him 48-22 last 2 seasons with his players - pretty impressive (and as you know, I was anti-Drew at the hiring).

But so far, he looks lost without his bench help...these are some really bad teams LUC is losing to...SJ State? NIU? and the games ain't close.

This is the worst team since Porter’s first season. I struggle to see how they win more than 6-7 games total this season. Absolutely inexcusable for a program with the resources and facilities Loyola has, both of which are excellent for a mid major program. There will be, and possible already are, some interesting discussions happening regarding the fallout and next steps.

Loyola is currently 284th in KenPom. Good for dead last in the A10 and over 50 places worse than the second worst A10 team.

Yeah it’s almost an unfathomable program collapse. Has to be something weird going on behind the scenes, otherwise it just doesn’t make any sense

Gotta be the worst ROI in American sports given our relative spend to the rest of NCAAM, no?

Regardless, I’m already feeling numb to the season which is the maybe the worst as a proud fan

I have been conflicted about NIL...as the money in sports increased it just seemed obvious that to some extent players were not fairly compensated. On the other hand, how it has worked out just seems way out of whack....the difference I see, feel now, is that knowing that the kids are getting big money is that we expect them to perform now that they are officially employees. I have seen some bad teams in the past but for the most part rooted for them to improve. It feels different with this team and I do not like my relationship as a fan to the team. We were fans , we shared a bond...I attended LU had a life changing experience, they chose to come to LU, they represented LU...It just seems way different now. Do any of these guys have any loyalty to the team ? Does the University have any loyalty to them? and how bout us as fans? Things just seem way more complicated, different. I also dont see how we turn back time. I wonder if college sports has jumped the shark?
I liked the comment about Porter's first team. That team was not very talented but they played hard and they were easy to root for....For me, win or lose, I just want to come to the game and root for a team that plays hard....is there any way that happens this year? Gonna be interesting to see how this turns out, cant get worse....We shoulda scheduled Eureka this year.
