I would say this .... Porter has one really good thing going for him that we’ve rarely talked about - a great stage presence. We are also elated with the on-court results he’s produced, we rarely talk about how great he is from an ambassador standpoint for our program. The dude brings a level of enthusiasm for our school and the game of basketball that is unrivaled. He never used “Ums” when he talks and clearly, articulately, and quickly gets his message out whenever he interviews. Porter obviously has years of coaching left in him, but if he ever got tired of the day to day stresses of coaching... or ever found himself in the situation we’ve discussed where he went to a big school and failed and got fired… this guy has national broadcast analyst written all over him. Dan Dakitch turned a subpar career as the coach at Bowling Green and a brief stop-gap at Indiana when they were in termoil into a broadcast career - and he doesn’t have half the charisma and enthusiasm as Porter has.

I’m just saying — we’ve got a gem in this guy. He brings everything positive to the table when it comes to college basketball. We are very lucky.

Burmeister had Loyola at 15-15 when he was fired. There was a major recruit coming in the next year and he was fired. Maybe if Loyola let him rebuild we would have had success by the late 99s instead of mid 2010s. I liked Farmer but Kenny had this program heading in the right direction. He was only given 4 years. It took Porter more. Sad day when someone’s career likely ends. Yes, I was his manager and he is my friend.

Tyrone Brown committed to Loyola the night before Coach B was fired. Imagine the excitement of signing a quality player to add to a 15-15 squad and then be fired within 18 hours. Tyrone went on to play in a higher conference (The MVC) at Illinois State.

Yeah....maybe Burmeister would have continued to move the program forward, but he was not fired due to wins/losses. Also (IMO) if he became a hot name as a coach, he definitely would have jumped to larger program in a heartbeat.

Regardless, it is interesting to see that some coaches get more patience than others at the mid-major level. I think at the Loyola "level" it makes sense to have a KPIs that aren't limited to wins and losses, especially if you have a coach that is a good fit for the school. That doesn't mean you can go 7-21 in year four, but seems like more mid-majors should consider if the program is overall trending upward - talent level, increased competitiveness vs. conference leaders (even if it doesn't translate into wins vs. those schools), graduation rate, $ from alums, campus interest, etc.

Otherwise, maybe you do something dumb like let Porter go after 2013-14 (10-22) or 2015-16 (15-17), and instead of wondering what seed we will be in the NCAA tournament today, we've blown the program up and are in the middle of rebuild #59.

Funny that Tony Barone, who coached Porter at Creighton, is mentioned as a possible successor to Burmeister in that article.

Things move faster than ever -- particularly with the state of College hoops and the FBI investigation. Porter will be in high demand this offseason - and if the Ramblers win a game look out.
My hope is that we offer him 8 years $550-600k per and 100% of his bball camp.

I suspect he stays with something in that area.

As far as open jobs - get ready. Rumor already that Richard Pitino is getting fired and Porter will be one of the targets.
