I read somewhere that IU has interviewed one of its alums, Calbert Cheaney., who is a current assistant with the Pacers. That hire would placate many diverse interests at IU. Porter is viewed unfavorably on IU fan boards as having a background too similar to Archie Miller's mid-major experience.

You’re correct I highly doubt they want to try another flavor of the month mid major coach.

Successfully coach from a Catholic university - that was Archie Miller and Tom Crean. I can't see them hiring someone who has a similar resume unless its Rick Pitino!

IMO, they'll go after Chris Beard from Texas Tech, Matta or one of the IU players - Chaney, Woodson, Fife.

Based on my reading of the tea leaves and "insider" reports, I'd peg it at:

50% Marquette
30% Stays at Loyola
15% Indiana
5% DePaul

Since this thread is sticking on a potential coaching change, curious what you guys would want in a new coach if Porter does leave. While continuity would be great (Kimbrough, Valentine or Gordon), no one on the staff has head coaching experience. Dennis Gates checks a lot of boxes (CPS guy, successful at a mid-major, well-connected in the area, etc.).

Gates would be very intriguing. I don’t know if he would want to step up to mid major ladder or make the jump to the high major. But damn having him back in chaicgo would be cool. Maybe get some CPL kids.... if pm leaves and gates is on the table let’s hop

Would like to preface this with I would likely name my first born Porter Moser if it was a condition of him staying, but I'm also a realist and know those offers will be tempting.

Thinking about it I'd want to put DePaul lower than that, but I don't think you can entirely rule it out just because it would let him stay in Chicago. I do think they're really all in on trying to get Kenny Payne though.

Personally, I think I'd like the continuity with Valentine. He's regarded as one of the best young assistants in the game and is likely destined for a head job sooner rather than later. He's young but has quite the track record. Played under Kampe at Oakland, two year grad assistant stint with Izzo at MSU, back to Oakland as the youngest assistant Kampe has ever hired, then last four year at Loyola. Think it could help keep the future core intact as I'm sure he was heavily involved in their recruitment.

Gates is also definitely and intriguing name based on everything you mentioned, and the huge turnaround he pulled off since he got to Cleveland State. However he was seen as possibly being able to land a high major gig, so might be more of a lateral move for him.

Beyond that I'm not sure exactly what I'd want. Probably someone with a good track record of recruiting the Midwest and who will keep "doing it the right way" as Porter likes to say. Since I'm high on giving it to Valentine, I don't think prior head coaching experience is super high on my list. Would maybe be worth taking a shot at a high-major assistant looking for a head coaching job.

Feel like my absolute ideal would to be stealing Mullins back from SIU, but don't think that seems like a real possibility.

I should have led with a similar preface. I am 100% enjoying this ride and loving every second with Porter and this team, but I am also being a realist--Marquette is one of the few handful of gigs that I have always though Porter would take and it just so happens to be open as Loyola is having yet another phenomenal year with Porter garnering national attention.

What about Valentine.....with Greg Lansing on the bench? Similar to a Juwan Howard / Phil Martelli situation that has worked out really well at Michigan.

Hopefully Porter stays, but if it were to happen think a short list of good coaches would be Gates, Valentine, Scott Nagy from Wright State, or Bryce Drew. The later of which has strong Midwest ties, is a good coach and would think moving to the MVC from the WAC would be a step up. Problem with Gates is if we had success he would be gone in a heart beat, not a bad thing but hopefully if Porter leaves we would have someone stick around for a bit instead of viewing this a stepping stone.

Am still holding out hope Porter stays, he deserves a pay raise and he can keep building a juggernaut in Chicago.

I think everyone here really hopes that he stays but if Marquette offers him a position it would be extremely hard to turn down. If that happens I think he's gone.

If we want to compare it to Gonzaga, it'd be great to get our Mark Few after our Dan Monson (although I certainly would wish Porter more success than Monson has had...). Someone to capitalize on what Porter has built here--the talent stockpile, the facilities, a renewed fanbase, the culture--and to stay here for good.
