My guess is that the posting of the athletic director's position is a mere formality to comply with some internal University employment policy.
In fact, I think the posting is a good indication that a candidate has been selected already, and will be introduced within the next 2-3 weeks, once all the administrative hoops have been jumped through.
My conclusion is reinforced by the fact that there is also a recent posting for the position of executive administrative assistant in the athletic department. This position reports to the AD, and the new AD would be the one doing the interviewing and selection. The timing of this posting clearly anticipates the arrival of the new AD shortly. I don't think it's even a stretch to suppose that the new AD has already selected his/her executive assistant.
I think you're absolutely right, swella. I thought the same thing when I saw the AD/Exec Asst. posts. I also thought it's too bad that the university uses these cynical techniques, and wondered if we'd lost out on a lot of talent with this approach. Maybe it's the way "everyone" hires these days, but you've got to believe there are a lot of very qualified (perhaps even excellent) people that aren't attached to a headhunter, search firm, or job hunter network.
