Toledo,

In my opinion, the Butler-Loyola comparison itself is false for the reasons I put forward. The history of Butler is as follows in year 2 of Barry Collier (90-91) they went 18-11. After that he had 1 losing season (92-93) and capped it off with 4 consecutive 20 win seasons and 3 bids (all 1st round losses) before moving to Nebraska. This is a better comparison to Porter than Lickliter (sans the NCAA tournament performance).

I struggle with any comparison where a coach takes over for a program that had been to 2 consecutive NCAA tournaments and 4 of the last 5 from their conference, had 5 consecutive 20 win seasons. Don't forget, after his sweet 16 year, Lickliter went 8-8 and 7-9 the next 2 years in conference before posting 2 good years, culminating in another sweet 16. There is just no comparison between Porters situation and Lickliter.

Keep in mind this - of the mid major coaches to take a team to the final 4, only PM and Stevens made it back to a sweet 16. The benchmark of a program (for better or worse) it what it does in the tournament, and our guy has a FINAL 4 and a Sweet 16 in his cap. The fact that Shaka and Larrenega could NOT accomplish that feat shows just how far PM has progressed the program. Oh, and by the way - the biggest 2nd round win against a #1 seed since 1985.

The Single biggest attribute PM brings to a major job is simple: his tournament success.

I agree with all of your points around him staying and I sure hope he does. I would expect we will know on Monday, maybe Tuesday if he takes IU. He is the target and now it just depends on if they strike a deal. I suspect your figure of 7yrs and $21m is the minimum it would take to pull him away.

Man, if DePaul DOESN’T get Moser, after the Payne stuff, they are going to look really stupid.

Things that we know and that have been reported:
1) DePaul is willing to spend a ton of money on their coach;
2) Kenny Payne was their top target;
3) Peevy had an “in” with Payne as a Kentucky guy;
4) Payne is a Chicago guy:
5) Depaul went to Milwaukee to meet with him;
6) Payne decided staying on as an assistant with a .500 New York Knicks team is better than returning home to Chicago to be the head coach of DePaul, who was willing to spend “big money.”

They are in big trouble. Now it’s no secret that they are going to offer (if they haven’t already) Porter. If he turns them down, it’s going to be a another huge ego blow to them.

This has nothing to do with Porter leaving but it would not surprise me if IU offers the next coach 4MM over 5 years. Miller was the 4-5 highest paid coach at a public university.

I will push back on the Lickliter comparison. Porter isn't going to fail any place he goes, if he does. We have all seen he is different and certainly Todd isn't in the same class as PM

two things come to mind.....
1. IF Depaul in the Big East throwing around cash..cant get the coach they want....what is is going to be like for LU to replace Coach Moser if it comes to that? and really who is going to equal Coach Moser??? heck lets say Brad Underwood comes....can you imagine the first day of practice when Underwood or whoever comes in....gonna be a let down....and how many of these kids came to LU to play for Coach Moser.? ugghhh!
2. When asked whether he would take the Indiana job he responded that 110% of his time had been dedicated to the game.....but I noticed he never used the words "us" he used "these guys" and " those guys".......I know like trying to read tea leaves....guess that is what you do when there is something you want to happen that you feel you have no power over..
3. I have been going to games since 63 and am committed to continue going whether it is Porter(Im hoping) at the helm or not.

Thing we also know: Porter was not Peavy’s first choice. Or Indiana’s. If I’m Porter (which I’m obviously not, but still), and I have my pick of jobs vs staying and continuing to build my monster, I only go to a place where I know I’m THEIR GUY. Not their consolation prize. But, we’ll see.

The money at DePaul is not significantly better. Porter makes more than $1,000,000 per year. DePaul was paying around $1,300,000. I am sure we will increase PM's money. The money at DePaul is not sufficient better to get over the inertia to make a move. We have a history of working with PM to improve the team.

He has already turned down better money at St Johns. Reportedly, the new coach at St Johns makes $2,600,00.

I am sure Payne turned down the gig because the money is not that much better than being an NBA assistant. He was making $900k as a Kentucky assistant and got a raise to go to the NBA.

I think IU is not going to go after a smaller school coach. They did that with Crean and Miller.

I think they are either going to get a P5 coach (Altman or Matta) or an insider from the IU tree (Woodson, Chaney or Beard).

Beard has zero ties to Indiana. Assistant at Tech under both Knights. IU isnt pursuing him. Marta is a retread from a conference rival, won’t happen. Woodson is 62 - no Juwan Howard juice there, kids today have never heard of him.
Altman isnt gonna leave the Nike $.

Bielien makes some sense, but who else is there? Unless he bombs the interview it’s PM’s job — if he wants.

Excellent! Now let's have DePaul hire anyone but Porter and get to work on next season.

That would be great news -- and most likely means that after their first meet today either PM or IU said "thanks but no thanks." I hope I keep being wrong and he stays a Rambler!
