Nice to see us get some good pub. Interesting is the comment about LU targeting the right recruits. I was looking at Verbal Commits and noticed that it appeared that no one in the Valley was recruiting a 3 or 4 star player, Is the assumption that we just wont get these kids so it is a waste of time? It just seems to me with LU just slipping into the top 100 in the US News and WOrld Report and winning the CBI that maybe now is the time to up who we go after.

I looked up who is going after Bogan's James Jones, and learned a lot. First, DePaul is going after him, but what's more shocking is they have issued offers to no less than 15 (!!!) shooting guards, including two others we've offered: Simeon's Zach Norvell, and Kenwood's Zion Morgan. Bradley has also offered that same trio, but they've already received verbal from a downstate shooting guard.

Second, we've also apparently offered Crisshawn Clark, a Juco kid from Ohio who's playing at Cañada College in Redwood City, CA (between San Francisco and San Jose). They're a science/math-oriented 2 year college (I went to high school for a year a few miles away) with superior academics that has had a few sports stars (Moises Alou, Harold Reynolds) go through their program. Cal, St. Mary's, Wichita State, West Virginia, Pitt, and some other big names have been looking at him but not offered.

Third, as of today we've offered to 5'8" point guard Evan Gilyard at Simeon, who is in the class of '17.

The early signing period is November 11-18 (isn't that later than past years?), but the latest fashion among players is to make a "dramatic" verbal weeks before.

There are actually quite a few. Some notables include...

Rivals 4**** Clayton Custer (LUC); 3*** Ben Richardson (LUC), Kale Abramson (Drake), Anthony Beane (SIU), Jesperson (UNI), Hawkins (ILSt)

And also like half of Wichita's roster... VanVleet (4), Grady (3), Frankamp (4), Brown (3), Kelly (3), McDuffie (3), Shamet (4)

WSU just signed 3* guard CJ Keyser. CJ was listed as a 4* guard by ESPN and promptly dropped to 3 the day they updated his profile with the commitment. He will be attending Brewster Academy for a prep year, but last year he attended Sunrise Christian Academy.

Swella some good research but I think the question is still relevant. On Verbal Commits...Out of the last 35 commits or offers there are tw0 3stars (LUs Custer is one of them) and out of the 17 offers listed for LU there is Zach NOrell who is a 4 star.. So the predominate offers across the COnference are 2 stars. I guess my point is ,,,,,,is LU in a position to start raising the bar on who they recruit. The University just made it into the US NEWs and World Report top 100 academic universities........we have won the CBI........ relatively new facilities,,,,,,,,,better non-con schedule etc.

There are a lot of players... a LOT of great players, who are considered 2-star recruits. WSU's Ron Baker, Milton Doyle, ISU's Reggie Lynch, Evansville's Ballentine and Mockevicius, and Indiana State's Jake Odum were all so-called two star recruits. Last year's A-10 player of the year, Davidson's Tyler Kalinoski, was a two star recruit. Likewise, there are a lot of 3+ star recruits that go nowhere. Sometimes just the fact that a BCS conference team is interested in a player is enough to make them a 3 star recruit, which shows the circular logic involved.

That is an excellent point. Often when a recruit commits to a BCS team, he gets an additional star. I'm pretty sure that's what happened with Barrett Benson, a local kid we were recruiting before he committed to Northwestern. He went from three to four stars soon after he committed.
