Fantastic game. And we did all the things we had to:
1. Limit Milik Yarbrough’s points; make others beat you.
He had 13 points-- almost five below his average-- and although he had 8 assists, he had NINE turnovers and only had six field goal attempts.
2. Get to the free throw line often, and make your shots.
We were 16 of 18 at the line.
3. Take (and make) quality three-point shots.
We shot over the magic 30% on threes that you need to beat ISU, going six for 17.
4. Catch them in transition.
We had three or four fast breaks before their defense set up.
5. Win the turnover battle.
We had 15, they had 18.
After the game, Ben Richardson and Porter had a great moment-- a bit of relief, laughing together, and maybe a few words about how the game ended last year, when Ben's near half-court heave almost went in for the winner. (They played the clip of that shot in last year's game, four times from different angles in fast and slow motion on the center court video board as one of their time out features.....)
As Porter was congratulating players, Avery gave a reluctant hug. Satterwhite made a really bad play that got him pulled, Avery didn't play at all. I watched Avery warming up, and I hope he's not a lost cause. I think he needs to resolve to work harder, because there's a big, fat opportunity for him to play a LOT next year.
The ISU student section was trying to fluster senior and grisled veteran Ben Richardson for having an air ball on a rushed three...
I was at the exit tunnel when the teams left the court and shouted congratulations to Porter--- he looked so happy to get a win in that building.
Saw Rob Hayes and family at the game-- he said they had nothing to do and drove down from the West Suburbs. I told him I've been there five years in a row watching us trying to get a win, and they brought good luck.
Lucas Williamson continues to impress.... He made so many plays on both sides of the ball--- six points, three rebounds, two steals, one assist and zero turnovers in 27 minutes.
Bruno's first half.... and Custer's leadership in the second half.
Great team win all around, four players in double figures, great help off the bench, and a lot of players doing valuable little things.
Ben Richardson only had two points and one rebound. But he was a +10 in the plus/minus. Jackson took ten shots at the basket (field goals and free throws combined) and scored 15 points... nice.
On the way home, the ISU radio announcers were talking about Loyola's efficiency, and said that the Ramblers average the lowest number of field goal attempts per game nationally. Loyola had only 44 field goal attempts, but scored 68 points.... That's pretty efficient. I'll have to look that up....
And we won the rebound battle, 27-24..... Wow!
