Another thought: can we send this game tape to the NCAA as part of Norris's waiver request?

Wish we could blame it on the new three point line distance--but a D2 school did not seem to have any issues.

95_99's post pretty much nails my thoughts. I would add that we kept trying to do what we've done in the past 3-5 years, but we don't have the same personnel. This team needs to find its own personality... For instance, set some screens for threes.... run plays to allow Aher to drive to the basket.... we might be better at trapping than in the past few years...

Might be time to consider pick and roll with Kennedy and Krut too.

Completely agree. This team needs to find it’s own identity. Completely different athletes than the last 3 years. Figure out how to utilize the speed on offense and defense and make it work. Keep hearing how fast we are now. Do something with the speed.

I mentioned nothing of Kennedy in my previous post, which was an oversight. He has the potential to be the Doyle / Townes of this team. He can get to the hoop. Not sold on his shooting ability from deep, or his ability to run an O from the point. Seemed uncomfortable when he had to get others involved, but thrived when he could break people down and get to the rim. Has the potential to be elite on D.

Wasn't at the game so I obviously didn't see it. For those who were there, do you think it was more of first game nerves/excitement that was the cause of the bad game or is it something that might be an issue all year?

If you were both at the open practice and the game, how did things compare? I know that it can be tough to fully understand when we play ourselves, but were shots as bad as they seemed from this game?

Not only did I have to watch that stinker of a game, but I also literally got punched in the face by Big Joe during a timeout. He also broke my glasses.

The cheerleaders were throwing wadded-up tee shirts into the stands like they always do. One was coming right to me when from behind Big Joe stuck his Big Claw in my face trying for the interception. Despite the clear interference I held on for the completion.

The tee shirt came in handy for wiping up all the blood pouring out of my nose.

Wasn't at the practice, but definitely a looked like a lot of nerves. Tons of pushing and trying to make things happen instead of letting the game come to them. I think if just a few of those early 3's or layups fall it's a completely different game.

From this Phoenix recap http://loyolaphoenix.com/2019/10/loyola-mens-basketball-drops-exhibition-opener-to-d-ii-indianapolis/

Quote:
“You worry sometimes with new guys, they put all their eggs in the shooting basket,” Moser said. “If they miss a shot, everything kind of drops. We missed some shots early, I think we three or four airballs. Some guys never turned it after that.”

I thought Pipkins showed some nerves. The freshman did not, in my opinion. Krutwig may have been a bit over-amped. He was running sprints for like 5 straight minutes before the game for some reason.

The returners just didn't seem ready to play. You wouldn't even have known Aher was on the court for the first 30 minutes. We played better when him and Lucas started playing with some energy, and we got the ball inside to Krutwig a few times.
