They say U of Alabama is after G Marshall of the Shockers !! They appear to be going to offer him 3 Million dollars a year. So far Alabama makes no apologies for this.

THIS is what College Hoops is coming to. This is so vile to me that it needs no further comment from me.
As for the long view-If Marshall stays at WSU, it will reinforce what I think of him and the VALLEY.. He stays--PM stays and the rest of the winners stay to build up our Conference , taller than it already is. The SEC is what it is, in my opinion --for the most part, a money grubbing two bit bunch---Vandy excluded .
Pearl to Auburn speaks for itself !!
Where has HONOR and INTRGRITY gone ?? Certainly not south of the Mason-Dixon Line !!!

The short view of course is. that his moving on would help the RAMBLERS enormously , but to what end ? I prefer a winner but one who beats the best.

Our present tourney is NOT the best, but it IS a step up from oblivion !

If he leaves I would bet Jans, his former assistant would come back to take over. He turned Bowling green back around and made them a MAC contender in less than 1 year.

I don't see him leaving for an Alabama type program. He makes a pretty good size salary at WSU, so it's going to take not just money but a prime time gig (ie North Carolina, Kentucky, UCLA, etc) to even have a chance. We'll see

I'm just so lost on this post. People stay at jobs (even in our "real" world) because they like the culture, geography, intangibles and, of course, the money. People do not often stay out of loyalty if there is a better opportunity, regardless of why they deem it to be better. Many people would be real interested in nearly doubling their salary, but maybe Marshall likes the SEC, his wife is from Alabama or (god forbid) he likes the word Crimson. Most of us have had similar dilemmas and I can never figure how or why loyaly is a part of it. I love my company, but I stay because it works for me. If Marshall goes anywhere good for him. If Porter wins the MVC in a couple of years, he will likely go, too. Lastly, sports has little loyalty in either direction.

The SEC is getting more serious about basketball, maybe because Kentucky is dominating all of them so thoroughly. Auburn got Bruce Pearl this year, Alabama just cut loose a pretty decent coach, and Mississippi State just hired Ben Howland. Add Calapari and Billy Donovan, and the league might very soon get back into the top four in conference strength. Yes, basketball is a distant second at most SEC schools, but when football is over and they finally notice the basketball team, those Pow-fuhl Good Ol' Boys don't like to have their precious Suthehrn onahh tahnished. (I spent one winter producing the Arkansas women's basketball games, so I know pretty much how it works).

So working one winter producing the Arkansas women's basketball games gives you license to defame an entire region of the country?

Oh poor old Pollyanna Brot, who thinks Loyalty and Integrity have a place in today's scene. What about a Coach who brings his team from mediocrity to the heights ? He then takes the money and goes--or does he stay and keep his team at the top--year in and year out. If one or more--say ten to pick a number--decided to stay put and revel in the success of their team and its school, that would start to blow a hole in the obscenity that greedy power drunk 'Institutions" of higher learning Sports has become.
If Marshall goes--he goes --and just becomes another carpet-bagger . Sad !

I would hope that Porter hangs in, is successful, really successful, and LUC sees this and rewards him substantially for doing so. BTW , my definition is rising to the winning traditions of Gonzaga, Georgetown et al . First--
--Win this tourney--beat Seattle now, worry about who else when the time comes
--Win the Valley shortly
--------That will get the proper recognition
--Advance deep into NCAA Tourney--year after year. ( this of course will bring financial reward plus GLORY

Porter can and must do this
Loyola WILL be back on top

Poor old Pollyanna BROT !!

sorry Brot. Got to disagree with you on this one.
Loyalty is a two way street but it has broken down almost completely in our society at least at the Corporate level.
Staying at a company thirty years and getting a nice retirement is a thing of the past.
If you can get the big bucks based upon some limited success you grab it and go.

Want proof just look at the Archdiocese of a major Midwestern city located on a lake. They are offering retirement to all people in a class (to comply with the law) over 55 years of age. Why? cut costs! Health care, salary and benefits. But they are also hiring. Who? well young people desperate to find a job as their mediocre education has not opened doors.
I don't want to go off on this too much. But wasn't there a sign outside of a German concentration camp that said: "Work makes free!"

Today we have corporate execs who make hundreds more than the average worker who might be told that they won't get a raise but they are lucky because they can keep their jobs. These fat cats with stock options cash out by merging their company with another. Or they might threaten to go overseas or send the jobs to a third world country. And they pay a 15% tax rate on capital gains.

So as Colonel Ludlow said in the movie Legends of the Fall, "Screw em!". If Marshall can get more money somewhere else, he should grab all he can get. Same for Porter who had to work for three ADs in four years at ISU.

So the new definition of the long view is a week from today as far as I am concerned.
