I'm not sure what this is all about (On edit: NOW I am.), but today on Loyola's career website a posting appeared for an assistant men's basketball coach opening. The job description sounds like a junior position with duties akin to those of a Director of Basketball Operations. https://www.careers.luc.edu/applicants/ ... 7615185794 It looks to me like they want to give Matt Gordon back the title of "assistant coach", but I don't see how they can do that and not run afoul of NCAA regulations that permit only three assistant coaches. Maybe something else is afoot... |

well one thing is for sure, it won't be a former Loyola basketball player that gets the job. |

One possibility which comes to mind is that there might have been some procedural snafu when Brian Mullins was promoted over Matt Gordon, somebody complained, and Human Resources ordered the job to be reposted. Pure speculation on my part. |

This always bugs me about LU...we all have to play amateur Sherlock Holmes just to figure out what is happening with coaching positions. Fans want to know what is happening....just tell us. |

NCAA allows only "3" assistant coaches for recruiting, but the 4th (usually the director of basketball ops) can be titled whatever they want. In PM's 1st year, Rick Malnati was a "special assistant" but basically an assistant coach who couldn't recruit. The position requires 2-4 years of basketball coaching experience (not a lifetime but more than required for a typical director of basketball ops job). Peculiarly for a listing posted today, it opened on 6/30. Personally, I think this is the HR bureaucracy catching up to the Steve Shields hire (whose hire was announced 7/7). |

This is a replay of the Michael Lewis disappearing act of 2011. Porter hired Lewis from Eastern Illinois with great fanfare, but he fled to the greener pastures of Butler after only a few short weeks as a Rambler. Judging by the job posting, it looks like the plan of succession is for Matt Gordon to get his job back as an assistant coach, which makes our coaching staff awfully green. |
