Damn, forget about a BCS college job. Talk about making it big! Congrats to him and his family. I wonder who BU's next coach will be.

Wow. Incredible hire by the Celtics.

Congrats to him but I don't think this is a good move for either party. Perhaps I'm way off base, but I don't think his game translates well to the NBA (regardless of how young the Celtics are).

A couple of possible ripples from the Steven's departure with Loyola implications:

2013 Butler recruit Nolan Berry could possibly be in play again if he decides to re-open his recruitment. Loyola was on Berry early as one of the first schools to offer him.

Butler assistant coach Michael Lewis might be looking for a new job. He bailed on Moser to accept the Butler job. I wonder if Moser would consider taking him back?

I think it's pretty low risk for both sides. Celtics are in full-on tank mode. He'll have a few seasons worth of slack to try and implement his culture. If he wins he'll be a legend and if he sucks he'll be the top college candidate the moment he's fired.

Brandon Miller is the new coach at Butler.

Here is my substantive contribution to the discussion of Brandon on the Butler message board:

This surprised me from the Celtics standpoint. They've had a past history of hiring college guys in Pitino and O'Brien without success. And 6 years? I don't know about that. They're obviously rebuilding and I don't know if they'll be able to draft well enough to get into playoff contention. If you're a free agent, is Stevens the guy you want to play for?

That said, his strategies should work well in the NBA. Butler has always been big on ballscreens, probably executed it better than any other team I played against. He's always coached a system predicated spacing the floor with shooters and that's how they NBA game is played.

From Stevens perspective, this is a golden opportunity. I think they'd be a bit stuck at Butler for a while. If he gets fired after a few years, he'll get any college job he wants - see Pitino or Calipari. 6 years, 22 million for a guy that took over a great team & turned it into something special...
