I am still trying to figure out the old rules as well as the new rules/interpretations on contact and freedom of movement. A link to an NCAA instructional video was included in today's pregame e-mail. It was pretty informative. At around 3:30 in the video is a discussion of guarding in the restricted area under the basket. One main point is that if any part of either of a defender's feet is in the air over the restricted area line, it is illegal guarding. The second clip following (beginning at 5:00) illustrating this principle seems odd to me in stop action. A player establishes position near the arc with arms in a vertical position as a driving opponent comes toward the basket. They collide and the defender is called for illegal guarding inside the arc because his left heel is suspended over the line. But if you look closely, his feet are on the floor outside the arc until the shooter makes heavy contact (probably involving very sensitive body parts) which pushes the defender backward. The NCAA is using this as a teaching tool on how to get the call right (illegal guarding in this case, they say). If anybody else wants to bother to look at the video and help me figure this out, I would appreciate it. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9f9-tk ... e=youtu.be |
