It has been two full days since Matt Chastain was hurt against Eureka. I have viewed each of the first three games start to finish ESPN3.. I only say that to demonstrate my interest in this team. I couldn't be there in person. I have been watching the young man since his high school tournament and have been very excited to see his career take shape at LU. I wish the team had more regular contact with the fan base about whats going on with the team. I find their online information generic and obviously lacking.. I think more engagement of those interested in the team would be well received, and would pay dividends By the way, I really hope Matt's situation is not serious, or if it is, that he recovers well and gets back to the team better than ever.

Matt tweeted a few hours ago that he was on crutches in the airport. That means at least he's going with the team to the Paradise Jam Tourney in the Virgin Islands. This may be good news about his injury, but not necessarily. As I understand it, it's standard medical practice if knee surgery is required to wait some period of time for any swelling to go down. I know that both Satterwhite's and Negron's surgeries were performed well after the injury was sustained.

Couple of things !!--

--Once again Porter and Watson AND the rest of those in power showed class in taking Matt to the JAM
--He is probably hurt BUT not too badly whatever that means-
--This does tell the team a lot---together factor

He and this team truly deserve a break--poor word choice-- after ALL the injuries our team has had over the years. Let us hope it is only a strain and that Matt will be back shortly We shall see !

I have to say that I agree with you. I acknowledge privacy concerns when it comes to injury, but why can other teams share more information? I don't know the answer to that.

The big exception on injury news was with Milt's shoulder before last season. They made a huge announcement about a torn labrum, openly threw out the surgery option, and then it turned out he didn't need surgery at all.

In some cases, I think it may be some type of Belichick-ian coach secrecy thing. The thinking could be that if, for example, someone gets hurt in practice, maybe you don't want to announce it so that you throw off the other team's planning. I personally doubt that this type of strategy has much of an impact, but at least it is a strategy.

It does backfire in some cases though. If a player isn't performing well, fans get on him without knowing whether he's dealing with an injury. I remember finding out that Crisman broke his hand in practice a few years ago only because I sat next to his mom at games.

In the case of Matt, we all saw him hurt his knee. I don't think St. Joe's is game planning for him, and as fans, we're simply concerned for his well-being. This isn't some life-threatening disease requiring privacy. It's a basketball injury, and I think fans have some interest in knowing what is going on. They may not have a full diagnosis yet, but I think you could at least tweet something like: Matt injured his knee Monday night and had an MRI Tuesday. We expect the results soon.

I agree completely, ahunte1. It's not just the example of the St. Joe's player I brought up earlier, there have been plenty of instances where MVC teams have been clear, upfront, and open about player injuries. Examples:

MBB: Ron Baker Diagnosed with Stress Fracture
T.J. Bell Will Miss 2015-16 Campaign With Foot Injury
Sycamores Battle Injuries Early In Preseason Camp
Valentine Out 2-3 Weeks

Quote:
SHAMET OUT
Marshall announced at his Monday press conference that, pending an MRI, freshman guard Landry Shamet has experienced a likely stress fracture and will be out for several weeks. Shamet averaged 8.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 19.7 minutes through the first three contests. His five steals are tied with Baker for the team lead.

I think the injured player should have the final say-so about whether he wants the school to report on his injury or not. The default position should be no disclosure except if the player has signed a clear and explicit release authorizing it, which he could revoke at will.

I guess what I object to is the notion that fans have some right to this information. No we don't. The fact that other schools may release injury reports doesn't change the equation in my mind that the player's right to keep his medical condition private trumps everything else.

This whole argument is largely academic anyway, since there aren't any secrets anymore with the internet and social media. Chastain was injured Monday night and by Thursday morning we know his diagnosis. What's the problem?

I would like to maintain the distinction (however tenuous and contrived) between college and professional sports by not having colleges adopt the equivalent of the NFL's mandatory injury reports or baseball's disabled list.

Porter tweeted about Matt's injury ("season ending ACL tear") about 6 hours ago. Is that official enough? Or do you want it notarized?
