| Post subject: | Loyola Athletics' New Hall of Fame |
As someone who's been an amateur historian on several subjects that have often been overlooked (Loyola basketball, the South Loop neighborhood of Chicago, the CTA, etc.), I'm really looking forward to this new Hall of Fame. http://www.loyolaramblers.com/genrel/120816aab.html I'm hoping that there's some representation of some of the social, cultural, and neighborhood aspects of Loyola athletics-- such as the El station's role in getting fans to and from games for 100 years, of course Alumni Gym, the old football field which hosted intercollegiate games until 1930 and Loyola academy games into the 1950s, Loyola's football appearances at Wrigley Field, the December 28, 1962 game against Wyoming at the Municipal Auditorium in Oklahoma City (believed to be the 1st time an all African-American squad played for a major college team), etc. |

JCT's suggestion that the Loyola el station should have a place in the Rambler Athletics Hall of Fame is interesting but problematic. I concede that in a "It takes a village" and "You didn't build that" kind of way infrastructure and behind-the-scenes workers all played an important role over the years in contributing to the success of Loyola athletics, but it is a slippery slope and the question becomes where do you draw the line in deciding who or what deserves a special mention. If public transportation deserves to be cited, then why not other public utilities like the electric grid, sewers, roads, etc.? Surely these all played a part in making Rambler sports possible. I know I personally have used the washroom facilities at Rambler games much more frequently than the el. And don't forget the police and firemen who make the campus safe from mayhem and conflagration; the postman who delivers all the signed Letters of Intent; the food workers who provide nourishment to the athletes; the factory workers who make the athletic shoes and uniforms; the custodians who clean up after games. The list goes on and on. Should we honor one or a few and slight the rest? If I got to nominate somebody for inclusion in the Rambler Hall of Fame, it would be Bruno's Lounge for its social and cultural role in getting fans lubricated before and after games for over 60 years. |

I totally agree with Swella on this one. However, I would nominate Hamilton,s, since it was retired a few years ago. Bruno's is still active and most halls of fame do not include currently active participants. |
