If Porter leaves, we could pull a DePaul and bring back a former coach!

UIW's Burmeister will not return as head basketball coach

DePaul and LU both blew it when they overlooked Doug Bruno when he was right there on staff. His lady demons destroyed Marqette to win the conference tournament yesterday. Guess they thought he was too hot tempered in his younger days.

Obviously, that’s a good joke, but in all seriousness, I have reassessed my opinion on Porter’s future and don’t believe he goes anywhere next year unless something crazy happens and we go to the elite eight.

I think Porter is at a point in his career is not going to jump at an opportunity from a bigger conference bottom feeder or mid-level conference team to start over with building. Now, if he elevated his status to the point where big-time winning schools were looking at him to fill a vacancy, that would be a different story, but I don’t think he has the Resume for that right now like Gregg Marshall did. I have strong feeling that he doesn’t want to leave the Midwest either, particularly Chicago, given his upbringing here and his three children. It took him seven years to get up to the top, and I think as long as the university is willing to reward him for it, he’s not going anywhere.

it’s nice just to be able to enjoy the ride that we’re having right now, but as a Rambler fan, it’s nice to have the concern of possibly losing our coach as opposed to worrying about the university keeping a coach that we all know sucks.

I completely agree with Toledo.

I think there is a ZERO chance that Porter leaves after this season. But if he strings 3 or 4 seasons like this together!?!?! I don't know... At that point he very conservatively could quadruple his salary by going to a P5... And even if he got fired after 3 years in that position he could retire before he was 60 and be sitting on a really comfy nest egg for the rest of his life. I know this is going to get Brot worked up but that kind of money has to be very tempting. To look at it in a less greedy way....In my example it would take him working roughly 15 years at Loyola to make what he could make in 6 (3 at LU, 3 at P5) years if he leaves for a P5. That's retiring NINE YEARS early.... being with with wife NINE YEARS early..... Being with his kids NINE YEARS early. How can you blame someone for making that choice!!!!

But hopefully in 15 years we're all at a ribbon ceremony for the revealing of his statue out in front of the Joe!!!

Agree with what's been said. It's a fact of life for mid-majors. Hell, even Marquette lost their coach to Virginia Tech and Butler to Ohio State. It's a good sign though--shows your program has been succeeding. And Porter's assistants have been poached for higher jobs as well which shows that Porter knows how to hire--and he has a very talented group of assistants now.

I think the Chicago Catholic appeal will work to an extent with him. And maybe if some other schools come a calling, Loyola reaches into its deep pockets and offers a competitive salary. We have the largest endowment in the conference and larger than a lot of schools that are considered better basketball schools. This is our moment to rise up and match the Gonzagas, Butlers, Wichitas, etc. It would be great if the school dug deep and at least tried to keep him around when bigger programs inevitably reach out.

For now, I am just going to enjoy this awesome ride. Try to put the constant worries about the future out of my mind for a bit (scheduling, Custer grad transfer, Porter, attendance, etc.).

Not to tell stories outside of school, but Porter and his family aren't hurting for the money. He could call it a day today and be just fine.
