ISUr had more talent than us last season too...but theyre coached poorly, have no discipline and dont play team basketball. I assume if they have a bunch of talent on their bench it will lead to infighting within the squad. I wont change my mind until their coaching staff proves they are good for something other than snarkily using twitter to rag on the selection committee.

I was standing next to Big Joe at the Arch Madness final last year, and Malik Yarbrough was trying to shake and bake and dribble drive through three defenders to the basket, and Joe said, "That's right. Do it yourself. Try to do too much." Yarbrough got his own rebound, in part because the shot was so bad after it was put up in desperation around defenders. And he tried to go up again, through two or three players, and Joe said, "Come on, try it again.... You can do it all yourself......" And the two or three people around us all laughed because that's EXACTLY what he did.... try to score by himself through three defenders.

Yes, I know Yarbrough is very talented, and most players can't guard him one-on-one. And he gets a LOT of assists from drawing a single defender and dishing off. But he doesn't have much discipline, nor do a lot of ISU players. And they're particularly bad at the beginning of the season, when they seem to have forgotten over the summer and fall all the things that work well in team-oriented ball.

By the way, they just released their non-con schedule today. If ISU comes out of the gate and beats both Florida Gulf Coast at home and Belmont on the road (where Belmont is 172-27 since opening their building), I'll take notice.

They've been top three in the Valley for the past four years, I think, and I would expect them to be there again.

That said, I agree about Yarbrough. I'm sure he frustrates their fans, too. If you're sitting in the first couple rows, you have to pay attention because he might hit you with a pass.

EDIT: Their depth took a hit today:

I was really impressed by Elijah Childs last year. He didn't get into the starting lineup until after midway through the season last year. I think he's going to be high up on the all-conference second team as a sophomore, with a shot at the first team. If none of his teammates regress, Bradley should be an 11 or 12 game winner in a more competitive conference than last season. And Bradley has a better defensive scheme than SIU. On the other hand, SIU will be able to start five seniors who are 6'5" or taller, including 6'10" Kavion Pippen.

This is going to be a really good and exciting conference in 2018-19.

Illinois State lands at #66.

From what I'm reading about us in other opinion pieces, we'll probably be coming up in the next week or so, maybe in the mid-50s.

Another one of our opponents for this year pops up, St. Josephs at #63.

Add that to these other future opponents:

Illinois State at #66
Southern Illinois at #76
Bradley at #91
Ball State at #96
Valparaiso at #112
Northern Iowa at #129
Grambling State at #144

Grambling barely cracked the top 300 in Kenpom last year. I'm shocked they are so high in this.

They probably get tabbed as #144 because they're projected to win the SWAC. The top RPI in the SWAC last year was Texas Southern at 212. Grambling won the regular season championship but was one of 17 teams banned from postseason for insufficient APR score.

Also, Boston College comes in at #60.
