Just got the following from the AD: Quote: With the start of the 2018-19 sports season officially kicking off this month, we wanted to alert you to some major changes in how you may have previously viewed Loyola and Missouri Valley Conference events online on The Valley on ESPN3.
In the spring, ESPN exercised an option in its contract with the MVC to put selected programming behind a pay wall (ESPN+), meaning some of the games you had been able to watch for free in previous years will now require a subscription. This fall, nearly two-thirds of Loyola’s live broadcasts will be shown on ESPN+ at the cost of $4.99 per month. We strongly encourage you to download the ESPN App, which will allow you to access ESPN+ and receive an unmatched, one-stop digital sports platform that provides easy, dynamic access to everything ESPN offers, including Valley on ESPN games. For the $4.99/month fee, subscribers receive thousands of additional live events and original shows. For any questions about the new ESPN App or ESPN+, please contact the ESPN customer care line at (888) 549-ESPN or online at support.espn.com. |

I'm a little upset about this move and ESPN. I understand that they are losing revenue with people dropping traditional cable and they see this as a means of regaining some of that. However, I already pay to get their regular channels, and I got an email about a month or so ago from Google Fiber saying my bill is going up because networks are raising the prices for their services. So basically, I'm getting hit from both ends on this. My regular tv price goes up and if I want the same thing as I was getting before, I'll have to pay even more. I'd much prefer a system where they say, if you have our regular channels and pay for that, all the online streaming is free. Otherwise pay up the extra cash for internet streaming. Besides, it not my fault that ESPN made a bunch of terrible contracts and put programming out that drove a lot people away. Hopefully NBC Sports Chicago puts a lot of the games on the TV for all you Chicago residents, and that we get big enough where we have a lot of games on CBS Sports and the main ESPN channels. |

Anyone heard anything about radio for this season? It is a shame that we are put into this situation after such a successful season. I see this as weakening the entire MVC position - for all sports! Can Loyola negotiate with other options on their own behalf. Disappointing . . . |

Watson's letter says that ESPN has the option of putting "selected programming" behind a pay wall, and that they have chosen to select "nearly two-thirds of Loyola's live broadcasts." It seems to me that Loyola fans are being discriminated against. I wonder if Loyola gets a share of the revenue generated by this action. |

It sucks that we are going to have to pay extra, but as an out-of-town fan, it’s a 25 dollar hit I’m willing to take. The reality of it is that we are not in a power conference and don’t get very many televised games. Five years ago if you told me for 25 bucks (probably $1 a game) I could watch almost every Loyola game from wherever I want - I would jump right on it. I’ll do the same this year. |

To any of us on this site the $25 is inconsequential... But... how does this affect the casual basketball fan? the "chicago sports fan"? I assume this would hurt quite a bit? right? |

Loyola only gets its regular share from the MVC. They do not receive extra for more games on ppv. These are terms the Valley negotiates on behalf of its members. The MVC general philosophy is everyone shares equally when possible. |
