Just read that the Sun Times has announced their all state teams. Kennedy is on the 4A first team and Welch is on the 4A second team. Congratulations to both of these young men. Really looking forward to seeing them in action next season!

As for Kennedy and Welch, I think there is a very good chance that Kennedy will be First Team All State and Welch second team.

Three guesses who said this over a month ago. First two don't count.

Now that I've gotten the important thing (self-congratulation) out of the way, I thought I'd post a link to the Sun Times article:

My guy Jeremiah Williams from St. Laurence earned 3A second team honors as a junior. He just followed Coach Mamon on Twitter and there are more follows which suggest we're interested.

was shocked to see no on from my high school on the list.....They had 2 wins and scored less than 30 in 13 games....
But my real question is Welch.....he is listed at 6"8......In recent years we have seldom fielded a lineup with more than one guy over 6"5 mostly due to the 4 out 1 in offense, the fact that most of the Valley has been smaller and with PMs priority on defense we have needed to defend the perimeter......So how does Welch fit it here......will he need to turn into a 5 like they have tried to do with Negron or can he defend on the perimeter and play one of the 4 outs spots on offense.

Welch is definitely not a 5 and I'm sure Porter is smart enough not to try to turn him into one. We already have two underclassman 5s in Krut and Frank so there's really no need to play Welch inside.
To me Welch is a big 3 who is very comfortable on the perimeter and doesn't really like to mix it up that much inside. I seem to recall him once actually refer to himself as a guard. I could see him fitting comfortably into a 4 out 1 in offense. How he plays on defense is another question as I've only seen him in the back of a 2-3 zone.

Based on the highlights I’ve seen, Welch has a pretty decent outside shot. I see him potentially being a Ingram/Jackson role as a wing who is a threat inside and outside. We really didn’t have that this year, which was a huge loss. Aher was the closest, and the hope going into the year was that he would step into that role, but he was zero threat from the outside.

Donte Ingram is 6'6...what's another 2 inches?!

If he is quick enough to guard the perimeter and can hit outside shots, he will be great. If he becomes a liability getting beat when he is guarding outside the paint, then we will have a problem.

Here's what Joe Henricksen said about Welch when he signed:

"Welch’s game perfectly suits the evolution of modern basketball with the need for players with size to switch on screens, make shots, put it on the floor and be a threat to drive and pass. Plus, he runs the floor, competes at a high level and boasts outstanding agility for a player at his size."

Right, I was going to say that. We also started two guys over 6'7 this year in Aher and Krutwig so it's not really true that we "seldom fielded a lineup with more than one guy over 6"5".

I’d have to agree with everything I’ve here; I’ve kind of thought of him as a better version of Bruninga over at ISU. He’s a tall guard; and he can put it on the floor a lot better than Bruninga, who’s more of a 3 point specialist. In terms of body-to-skillset he reminds me of someone ISU or MSU would traditionally have; he has potential to be an awesome mismatch guy.

The sun times noted he was one of the states best post players in their all area list; so maybe he has some decent post moves as well? The biggest question will be moving feet on D and getting around screens covering faster players. I’ve seen a couple highlight videos where he takes charges; which you love from a bigger guy.
