There has been some discussion by some about ridding ourselves of the 4out 1n offense.Seems timely for a discussion with Christian Negrons departure, which basically due to the fact that we run the 4out 1n....If we rand a double low post or a flex or something more traditional with a 5 and a 4.....Christian would probably either be starting or getting major minutes off the bench at the 4 and 5.
Could be wrong but I think there are several reasons for tons of teams using the 4out 1n. The first team to do it successfully I believe was the championship Villanova team of 2016. 4guys who could hit the 3 and 4 guys who could take it the hoop....which was once again important cuz they were trying to take hand guarding away and boom , guards could get to the hoop once again.....so we cleared out space for them and forced teams with two big guys to have one guard a more mobile guy on the perimeter and when you brought your real center out to pick and roll at the top lots of room for the guard to drive and if someone left to help you pitched out to the3 point line. But also for mid-majors and teams who were not competing in the power conferences they could now compete or have a chance against the big boys who could easily recruit as many big men as they needed...The smaller schools (remember for how long we were begging to get even one big man,,,,having to have Christian Thomas and Montel play the post...) had trouble recruiting big men....let alone two good big men....There are tons of 6"3 guys.....to recruit. So the 4 out 1 in makes it easier to recruit to your system and compete against teams with two bigs....or at least a fair trade off and interesting dilemmas and mismatches for both teams......but if you run the 4n1out and have a flexible guys like Donte Ingram( Bradley had two of these guys this year with Childs and Kenell) that really makes it effective.
I think we will see LU stay with the 4out 1n as long as the rules continue to allow guards to get to the hoop and it is easier for us to recruit guards to fit that system than to recruit Big Men to run another system.

Keep in mind we still tied for the conference title despite not having Williamson for half the season. For our system to be effective we need at least four players who can shoot. The problem was not the players but the mix of players.

We lost Richardson, Ingram and Jackson who could shoot. The that also opens la NM es for both passing and driving.

Next year we have six players who can play and flourish within that system. My concern is defence and lack of D 1 experience.

Loyola's version of the 4-out, 1-in scheme was created out of necessity in 2014-15 when our entire frontcourt (Osbourne, O'Leary, Cody Johnson, Jeremy King) transfered out, leaving only 6'4" Christian Thomas as our only returning frontcourt player. We got 6'7" Montel James from the Juco ranks; 6'6" Donte Ingram turned out to be a very productive freshman, but started only one game. But that was it-- Montel James was the tallest player on the roster, and our second tallest starter was Thomas (generously listed as 6'5").

With that lineup and using a much higher-intensity defense, we managed to win the CBI Championship, the Contintental Tire Tournament in Las Vegas, and won 24 games. And that was with Milton Doyle injured for something like 11 games of the conference season.

But we went to that scheme out of necessity. A lot of teams have done it, too. And it's not as unusual or difficult to game plan against now as it was several years ago.

If we've got Cameron Krutwig for the next two years, and we've got improved recruiting power as a result of the Final Four season, why do we need to stick to it? We can always create the flexibility to go big if we have the personnel. There are simply some matchups that give us problems, and when the opposition can gameplan for only one kind of lineup we're sometimes at a disadvantage. Krutwig has so much ability inside, but there are some things he can't do well-- he's an OK but not great shot blocker, he has below-average vertical (uh... let's face it... he has almost zero vertical), and I'd like to see him develop some more at creating space for teammates to drive to the basket.

JCT....the question for me is if we go to something else can we consistently recruit big men in multiples if the system requires it?

We Are 52-20 running it over 2 seasons with Krutwig. We’ve got two more years with Krut. Why change now?
