Tuesday, November 26, 2019 10 a.m.
John Gray Gymnasium, George Town, Cayman Islands

The Loyola Ramblers had one of their worst second-half meltdowns in years on Monday, turning a 6-point halftime margin into an 11-point loss against the South Florida Bulls. Again, the Ramblers shot well enough to win-- 51.4% from the field, the fifth time in six games Loyola has shot better than 50%. But too many turnovers, bad three point defense (allowing 47.6% shooting from distance), and smart adjustments by USF resulted in another loss.

The loss means Loyola will face Colorado State on Tuesday, instead of perennial NCAA Tournament team New Mexico State. New Mexico State broke out to a big lead on Monday, but Colorado State earned overtime before the Aggies surged ahead for a 78-70 OT win.

Three CSU players notched double-figure points in Monday's loss-- 6'11" center Nico Carvacho notched a team high 18 points to go with 6 rebounds, 6'0" freshman guard Isaiah Stevens had 17 points (12 of them on four threes) in only 25 minutes, and 6'5" freshman guard David Roddy had 11 points off the bench.

The remaining Rams starters are 6'4" grad senior guard Kris Martin, 5'10 sophomore guard Kendle Moore, and 6'6" sophomore forward Adam Thistlewood. The only other Ram who plays significant minutes is 6'0" senior guard Hyron Edwards, who transferred away from Texas Tech their march to the NCAA Tournament Final. Four Rams played 31 minutes or more in the OT loss on Monday, and seven guys played 25 minutes or more. However, the Ramblers had their minutes less well distributed in a regulation game.

CSU's coach, as many Rambler fans might be aware, is former Drake and Furman Head Coach Niko Medved. After leading Drake to an unexpected CIT bid two years ago, Medved announced DURING THE CIT TOURNAMENT that he'd be leaving Drake for CSU. He led the Rams to a 12-20 record last year, and CSU was picked to finish 9th among the 13 teams in the Mountain West this season.

Loyola simply must find some production from behind the arc. It doesn't matter if you shoot 52% for the game if you also shoot 22% from three point territory. It doesn't matter if you shoot 52% for the game if you only have 35 total field goal attempts for the game because you made 20 turnovers and you got hacked and sent to the line on your drives to the basket-- and shoot less than 70% from the line.

There has to be a patch for this otherwise talented team-- creating screens for three point shots, finding a player who can make 35% of his attempts from 26 feet, etc. Something has to be done. I haven't donethe math today, but Loyola might have one of the 10highest disparity margins in the nation between made three-point percentage and allowed three-point percentage.

From what I saw from the end of the CSU v NMSU game, CSU is VERY physical. They are going to punch us in the face every opportunity they have. Will we respond? Depends which Rambler team shows up. They need to learn how to win tough games, and this game presents a perfect opportunity to beat a physical team.
