Gentile Arena, Chicago, Ill.

Loyola gets a chance at a season sweep on Sunday against Valparaiso. The Ramblers beat Valpo 66-63 Dec. 30 at Valpo's Athletics-Recreation Center, where the Crusaders are 8-2 this year. The two previous times Loyola had a chance at securing a season sweep, they lost road games at Southern Illinois and Indiana State. Last time out, the Ramblers got pummeled at Indiana State, 68-39, in one of the most lopsided losses by a Loyola team since joining the MVC.

Valparaiso followed their home loss to the Ramblers with an overtime road win against Evansville on Jan 4. Since then, they’ve alternated wins and losses. Last Wednesday night, Valpo dropped their second home conference game against first place UNI 63-51. At 5-6 in league games and 12-12 overall, the Crusaders are on pace for their best season since joining the MVC. The Crusaders are a little deeper now from the last time Loyola played them, with 6’8” MVC Preseason Second Team guard Ryan Fazekas back from injury.

Valpo is likely to start Fazekas, Javon Freeman-Liberty, and Daniel Sackey at the guard spots, and Mileek McMillan and Donovan Clay in the front court. Freeman-Liberty is one of the top scoring players in the league, averaging 19.7 per game, and plays superb defense. He leads the Crusaders in rebounds (5.8 per game), steals (2.2 per game), minutes (33.8 per game), and made threes (44 for the season, despite shooting only 28.9% behind the arc). Fazekas is averaging 10.6 ppg in the five games since returning from injury and is shooting 45.9% behind the arc. Sackey, the 5’9” point guard, averages 6.5 points.

Six-eight junior forward Mileek McMillan averages 8.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, and can step out to shoot from distance (20 made threes on the season). In the last game between these two schools, 6’7” freshman Donovan Clay had a career high 21 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field. Clay averages 8.4 points 4.4 rebounds. Nick Robinson, a 6’8” forward was also impressive against the Ramblers, scoring 15 points (including 3 threes) coming off the bench. Six-foot-five senior forward John Kiser (5.8 points, 4.5 rebounds), 6’3” junior guard Eron Gordon (6.1 points per game), and 6’9” freshman forward Ben Krikke (5.8 points, 2.5 rebounds per game) also play key roles off the bench.

Freeman-Liberty is a great player, but Valpo is 7-9 in games where he is the leading scorer (and only 2-4 in conference games). In the last meeting between the Ramblers and Crusaders, Freeman-Liberty was held to only 10 points, and Mileek McMillan had only 8 points shooting a combined 8 for 23 from the field. For the Ramblers, Cam Krutwig, Tate Hall, Keith Clemons and Jalon Pipkins all had double figure scoring games, but Hall struggled a bit shooting 3 for 12 from the field.

The game is sold out, so it should be an electric atmosphere.

Just keep getting the ball to Krut and we’ll be fine.

I appreciate Tate continuing to shoot despite early 3 point shooting struggles. The shots will fall. Keep taking them.

I find Uguak to be the most frustrating player in Loyola history.
