Okay now that UIC has a real coach ,Luke Yaklich does the UIC program top us???? can we keep up...UIC has easier entrance requirements, larger stadium with easier access and closer to downtown....plays in an easier conference ( increases chances to get to Dance).
Also will they start playing us again ?

Not at all. We've had better recruiting recently that continues to improve. Plus, Porter has proven that he can be a head coach on top of that. Yaklich has never had his own program, so who knows what will happen? Dana Ford can recruit, but seems to struggle to be a good coach. Greg Lansing seems to be a great coach that isn't as good recruiting. You need both, and I don't know if Yaklich has both. Also, our game atmosphere is better. Our conference may be harder to win, but also provides the opportunity to get an at-large and would give a higher seed almost every year. Could UIC make a tournament a couple times? Sure, but I'd rather be in our position than theirs.

UIC will certainly be in better hands with Yaklich, but let's not be silly. If he has success there, he won't be there long. The emphasis there is IF

As for playing them, only in a Chicago-centric tournament with DePaul and Northwestern. Certainly, this would be a great atmosphere for the local fans, but I don't think we need to play any of the local Chicago teams compared to earlier last decade where we were trying to establish some sort of relevancy.

If we were to have a "local" tournament, a really good one would be an interstate challenge between us, Illinois, Butler, and Notre Dame. We could play in either Indianapolis or the United Center or have it rotate every few years.

So that Shaka Smart got his contract extended at Texas. Tough when you move up in the conferences to repeat the success at the lower level.
Much tougher than it seems; Liklihter from Butler to Iowa, Drew from Valpo to Vandy were two that come to mind along with the first Butler coach who turned the program around and then flopped at Nebraska. And how about Chris Mullins an icon as a player at St.John's and decided to pack it in.
Be careful what you wish for. How many have tried at DePaul since the Meyer's left?

Barry Collier did poorly (but made a lot of money) at Nebraska before returning to Butler to be AD.

UIC is not going to leap-frog Loyola from the Horizon League. When Butler and Loyola left the HL, it dropped from 12th in RPI to the mid 20s. The MVC has survived the departure of Wichita State much better than the HL did with Loyola leaving. The principal reason is principal... the average men's basketball budget in the MVC is about 2.8 million. The average in the HL is about 2.3, and that's in much more expensive markets. MVC TV revenue is also better than the HL,attendance is better, and NCAA Tournament revenue is better.

Did Smart get extended? His contract was already pretty long and expensive; plus I doubt schools want to be spending a ton of money right now.

That's why DePaul is in the worst position right now. A school like Texas wouldn't need to give any sort of extension; they can ride him out for another year. Apparently, Leitao's contract runs out in April. They need to either extend him or they won't have a coach.

As for DePaul, they've technically had 4 coaches since Joey Meyer: Kennedy got them to one tournament, Leitao had success during his first tenure there, Wainwright and Purnell left a lot to be desired.

You're right, but it should have been pretty easy for the HL to survive the departure of a program that had just 3 winning conference seasons between 1987 and 2013. Loyola may have had the most history and the best academic reputation in the HL, but the loss of Butler and Valpo certainly hurt the league's standing more. Strangely, the MVC didn't suffer as much from Wichita leaving because of Loyola's recent success.
