I think closing for "remodeling" when you've been shut down by the city is just a time honored tradition that's being carried on thoughtlessly. Hamilton's was often "remodeled" but never changed until after it was sold in the 1970s, and even then only slightly. As I sit here, I am looking at an original illuminated Pabst Blue Ribbon sign obtained on Dick Doan's last night as owner.

I managed to "liberate" a formica-top table from Hammies when the Doan regime ended, but I am envious of your Pabst sign, Scream!
I remember the Doan sons. One was Jimmy but I can't remember the other one's name. No free beer when they were bartending, while Tommy O'Malley would (very) occasionally pour you a free pitcher.

Albion Liquors had a 10% student discount when I was a student, it applied to booze. It was my go to.

One night after being over served by Tommy at Hammies....we stole one of the garbage covers from Sir Whoopies outside trash cans....remember it was a googy looking knight???? put it at the bottom of the stairs at Mertz to welcome AM students going to class......Albion had some interesting products...I remember Old Abe black cherry and 1/2 gallon bottle of a beer that I remember as Bruameister???????

"Meister Brau." Brewed by Peter hand Brewing Company of Chicago. I believe that it was the last brewery in Chicago, until the craft beer era began, when it closed in 1978. It was the originator of "Lite Beer." Miller Brewing bought the formula and Meister Brau name. The name "Lite Beer" was copyrighted. You may note that Miller Lite is the only brand that uses the spelling "Lite."
