A couple of interesting pre-season rankings come out this week.

The Athletic had Loyola #4 in their Mid Major Preseason ranking. UNI was #1. Disclaimer: the Athletic doesn't include Gonzaga in these rankings.

Mid Major Madness had the Ramblers at #4 and the Panthers at #5. One thing I also liked about their article is that they credited the Phoenix. Gonzaga was #1.

Although these rankings mean nothing, at least it gives us something good to talk about.

Could we fill one more roster spot for this year?

yor Anei, a 6’10” forward from Oklahoma State announced he was transferring today, and it looks like he will be eligible immediately. He averaged 8 pts, 2 blocks and 4 rebounds a game and his highlights are impressive. He’s from the all-too familiar Overland Park, Kansas! He looks like the type of player that would put us over the top and make us a legit contender, based on the one position weakness we have.

What do Yor Anei and Boris Yeltsin have in common?

What position of weakness do you mean? Backup center?

Well, theoretically, I’m referring to a “4,” although with the way we play, I would more nearly mean that if you slipped Yor In for a 6’7” Uguak and run Krutwig, Yor, Williamson/Hall, Kennedy and Clemons - that is a powerful lineup. Yor isn’t a dominant scoring center like Krutwig, but is instead a defensive beast. You could have them both on the court at the same time and not miss a beat.

I think we are 1 athletic forward away from being the most complete team, top to bottom, that we’ve ever seen.

I follow. I have high hopes for Welch in a role like that, too.

Out of all our players, I hope Welch is the one that makes the biggest leap in the off-season. I would be happy to see Welch and Uguak sharing the load in games and get 20 minutes a piece. I think it's important to give Welch minutes this year to see what we have with him, and see if he'll be ready to start the following year, or if we'll need to look for a 4 from the JUCO market.
