The NCAA men's basketball rules committee recommended 5 rule changes for the next year. These rule changes aren't final, but most of the recommendations will probably become rules:

1) EXPERIMENTAL - NIT only - Six foul rule. A player fouls out when he has either a) four fouls in a half or b) six fouls total in a game.

2) Team timeouts can replace media timeouts. For example, if a team calls a timeout with 17:00 left in the half, that counts as the 16:00 media timeout and the next media timeout is the first whistle under 12:00.

3) Refs can call a technical foul for flopping

4) Greater use of technology, live stats, etc on the bench

5) Shot clocks can display tenths of seconds

Most of these rules won't have a noticeable impact on the game, but I like the timeout rule and think it will help games flow better.

On the other hand, I hate the foul rule and think it will lead to unintended consequences. I can see any player with a high percentage look getting hacked at the end of the first half because the fouls are "use it or lose it" so you might as well foul and make a guy shoot 2. It could lead to a parade of low percentage shooters going to the free throw line.

I'm curious, what does the rest of Ramblermania think about the proposed rule changes.

I’m in favor of most of them. I like the TO rule from a fan perspective because I personally get annoyed when there is a team timeout then 30 seconds later there’s another media time out. Also am in favor of the flopping resulting in a technical. I’m with you on the 6 foul rule though. 5 is perfect for college. I get 6 fouls in the NBA where it is a longer game and it allows you to keep stars on the floor...I worry that 6 fouls for college hoops could lead to choppier games and less fundamentally sound defense. It also rewards top-heavy teams with less depth.

What a waste of time. I guess they have to do something to justify the time and cost of their useless meeting.
Leave the game alone. It works just fine. Another example of know it alls showing they know nothing.

Another attempt to bring the college game closer in line with the NBA, in my opinion. Obviously ignoring those of us who root for the college game precisely because of its strategy, school rivalries, the ability for non-super 5 star athletes to find a niche where they can contribute, PLAYING TOUGH DEFENSE WITHOUT FOULING, and coaching that happens during time outs.

Personally, I’d have been good with the extra foul when we played Oregon State. Gives more time for players to adjust to how refs are calling it early in the game. We were spoiled by Krut, but having a star player sit out for 15 minutes of the first half because of an extra touch call 3 minutes into play is ridiculous.

I also don’t think it affects the way we’d play defense, it was never about not fouling out, it was about not sending a team to the free throw line.
