Second-year head coach Tony Stubblefield brought in a lot of experienced transfers to bolster six pretty good returnees, and many people thought DePaul had a chance to finish out of the Big East basement if their nice pieces came together. But the injury bug has decimated the Demons this season.

Six-eleven senior center Nick Ongenda just had wrist surgery that will keep him out for 8-10 weeks. South Florida transfer Caleb Murphy—penciled in as the starting point guard—hasn’t played a single minute because of a pre-season wrist injury. Backup center Yor Anei, a fifth-year player who played at Oklahoma State and SMU, went down after three games with a foot injury. As a result the DePaul bench is short, and comparatively speaking, so are the starters.

The Blue Demons will likely start 6’1” senior guard Umoja Gibson, 6’0” junior guard Jalen Terry, 6’6´senior guard Javan Johnson, 6’7” senior forward Philmon Gebrewhit, and 6’6” grad senior Eral Penn. Johnson—a transfer from Iowa State via Troy-- is the leading scorer at 17.1 ppg, thanks to his 42.9% three-point shooting in the early going. Gibson is close behind in scoring at 16.6 per game, and leads the team with 7.3 assists per game. Penn is the top rebounder (and phenomenal on the offensive boards) with 8.1 per game (3.7 on the offensive glass).

With two expected starters and the top backup big man out of commission, DePaul only goes eight deep, and the only size off the bench is sometimes-starter Da’Sean Nelson, a 6’8” junior forward who averages 10.3 ppg. Both Nelson and Penn are foul-prone; Nelson has racked up four fouls in six out of DePaul’s seven games, and Penn had four fouls in each of DePaul’s first three games.

The way to beat the Demons is with defense and rebounding. DePaul has averaged 82.5 points and shot .494 from the field in their four wins. They’ve averaged 68 points and shot .356 in their three losses. On Wednesday they broke a three-game losing streak by beating Samford at home 103-98, but it took overtime, and they only got 46 minutes from three players off the bench. Four of the starters played 35 minutes or more; one player fouled out and two others had four fouls.

The Ramblers haven’t looked great for very long stretches this season, but the really bad stretches are getting shorter. Last time out, at least, the three-point shooting was really good (12 of 23!!). The Ramblers have been great at converting at the basket this season (if they can get there without a turnover), and the Blue Demons are short and short-handed right now.

In the all-time series, DePaul has a 38-19 advantage. Loyola has won the last two games, both of them on the road. The game is sold out, so it should be a great college basketball atmosphere with the Ramblers enjoying a distinct home court advantage.

Great preview as always.

Wonder if our old friends down in Norman helped out with any scouting report on Gibson, who they should know pretty well ;)

A few sloppy minutes towards the end there, but overall a great half. Seems like Drew is finding the rotation he likes, the starting 5 is playing great and then Thomas/Golden/Edwards off the bench

Schweiger impressive the past two games. Hit the freebies and take care of the ball.

Great rebounding, too.

13 point haltime lead erased by DePaul's 6th man on the court taking up the sideline outlet on breaks. Pathetic.

This one stings. They hit some deep 3s but our offense looked lifeless and we gave up wide open 3s in the second half.

That was super disappointing.

We just let them back in with open 3s and cold shooting.

This is the team. It is what is but they're pretty bad.

Outmatched in the only chair that matters on the bench. Gonna take a lotta patience for the Drew hire to pay off.
