Post subject:  RIP Brian Wheeler

Former Loyola Rambler Men's Basketball PxP Announcer Brian Wheeler has died.

Brian covered many of Loyola's men's and women's athletic programs in the early-mid 1980's as he started his career at Loyola's Radio Station: WLUW-FM (88.7). He was the commercial radio voice of Loyola basketball during the Ramblers Sweet 16 run in 1985, and continued to announce games on radio and television into the 1990's.

After his time in Chicago sports media, Brian worked in Sacramento and Seattle, eventually landing in Oregon as the play-by-play announcer for the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers for 21 years. He was at the top of his game and profession, and a proud Loyola graduate.

It was a honor to have known and worked with Brian at Loyola, as a student and later as a professional, for 40 years.

I am so sorry to hear this news. Brian was a classy guy. He came to LU as student after growing up in Los Angeles if I recall. He broadcast many Loyola sports on WLUW. I don't think they ever gave LU men's basketball on TV. I bumped into him occasionally around campus and he was always such a gracious person. We also lived in the same city for a while on the West Coast and I was able to get together with him a few times. He was very good at his job. He got the Seattle Sonics post-game show position and his talent quickly became apparent in that role. He worked his way up the food chain to become the Portland Trail Blazers play-by-play man. I lost touch with him when he moved to Portland. I lived six hours away from there and sometimes at night I'd be able to channel surf across a Blazers game on the AM side of dial if I were driving at night. It was fun to hear his recognizable voice. He was very good at his job and he was a great representative of The Loyola University.
