It seems that overall we have been able to get what we thought were PLUS additions in the portal. This has resulted in moderate success with the exception of one or two years. Part of our issue will always be our expectations since the Final Four run. We dont treat it as a gift but as an expectation which is fine with me. I would hope that we are always reaching for the top. But I got to thinking of roster construction the other day while watching Northwestern get its first B10 victory against USC...They started and played three freshman and benched two of their star portal gets.....the interesting stat was 22 assists and 6 turnovers. The two freshman, 1 turnover each. Also starting was a little used portal transfer. combined the 4 players had 2 turnovers and 11 assists....My point is that we seem to like to get tall,lanky, athletic players who have marginal ball handling skills plus we run an offense that seems to encourage or result in a lot of dribbling.....I guess my point is should we focus on making sure that each player on the court can handle the ball and limit turnovers....Recruit to this point in building our roster...and somehow match our offense and defense with our abilities so we can maximize our assist to turnover ratio. Roster construction seems to be a problem. We seem to have a lot of athletes but not necessarily a lot of skilled, fundamental players. Just an addendum. In the St. Bonnies game the TO team stat of 16 LU turnovers to the Bonnies 4 in general gave them 12 more opportunities than us as well as turnovers often lead to easier shots. |
