Duquesne Dukes 10-9 (2-4) at Loyola Chicago Ramblers 5-15 (1-6) – 1:00pm CST, Gentile Arena, Chicago IL

The Ramblers return home for the week where they will host twice. Ramblers have lost 6 in a row while the Dukes have lost 4 in a row.

On Tuesday night we saw a 28 point swing in which the Ramblers blew a 44-30 lead to St. Bonaventure and it turned into an 84-70 loss. The Bonnies were too much in the second half, getting hot and going on a 19-0 run at one point. It was an epic collapse of collapses as it looked like the Ramblers could finally break through to win one again in league play. This was the fourth loss in league play in which the Ramblers were able to control or win the first half before ultimately losing the game and blown out.

Last time the Dukes and Ramblers met was in Pittsburgh last year. The Dukes won an ugly game, 69-56.

The Dukes enter Saturday at 10-9 overall and 2-4 in A-10 play. They face a 2-4 road record heading into Gentile. Duquesne is one of the top scoring teams in the league, ranking fourth with 84.1 points per game. Its the 52nd best offense in the country. The team averages 17.1 assists per game, which is second best int he A-10 and 44th in the NCAA. While the Dukes can score at will and put up points on opponents, their defense is straight up ass and giving up 78 per game, ranking #290th. The Ramblers are not far behind them, giving up 77.5 which is now #282nd. We should fully expect this matchup to be defenseless on both ends.

In their last game against Saint Louis, Duquesne fell by a score of 81-77 to the nation’s 24th ranked squad. The Duke’s defense allowed SLU to shoot .49% from the field. One player who’s hot entering the week is Jimmie Williams. Against the Billikens he scored 28 points on 11 for 22 shooting, and 5 assists.

42.9% of minutes played and 42.9% of scoring return from 2024-25 roster. Tarence Guinyard leads the Dukes with 16.1 points and 5.3 assists per game. His 101 total assists this season leads the A-10, and he ranks sixth in scoring. He has 15 games with 10 or more points this season, including a career-high 30 against Villanova back on Nov. 15. He had three straight 20-point games to open A-10 play vs. Davidson, VCU, and Saint Joseph's. Guinyard has recorded at least three assists in all but one game this year. Second primary scorer, Jimmie Williams is putting up 16.0 ppg on the year to go with 4.5 boards. Williams is averaging 17.8 points over the last 10 games including an impressive showing against SLU this week. 3-time NIL transfer and 6th year senior, John Hugley, formerly of Pittsburgh, Oklahoma and Xavier, is the Duke’s third offensive weapon off the bench averaging 13ppg on 52% FG. Hughley had a nice scoring touch throughout non-conference before injury, with 4 games of 20+ but against very bad teams.

If not feeling demoralized and deflated after Tuesday night’s collapse at St. Bonaventure, I’d expect for the Ramblers to compete in this one and possibly gut out a badly needed win at home as it could be a close and sloppy game in which neither team focuses in on defense – that is if we predict outcome based on their defensive metrics and points allowed. The Bonnies were clearly not good on Tuesday until Daryl Simmons went unconscious from three in the second half and turnovers didn’t kill us, and the Dukes aren’t much better here W/L and stats wise either. Avoid another 16 turnover game and second half collapse in which we blow another double digit lead and we may finally see a W again.

Duquesne Probable Starters – 6-5 G Cameron Crawford, 6-5 G Maximus Edwards, 6-8 F Jakub Necas, 6-5 G Jimmie Williams, 6-2 G Tarence Guinyard

Loyola Probable Starters - Rubin, TBD, JOJ, Anderson, TBD

LAST 10 GAMES FOR BOTH SQUADS

Ramblers: 2-8, averaging 68.0 points, 33.1 rebounds, 14.0 assists, 3.9 steals and 3.5 blocks per game while shooting 42.3% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 79.8 points per game.

Dukes: 4-6, averaging 81.6 points, 33.8 rebounds, 16.9 assists, 7.7 steals and 3.3 blocks per game while shooting 45.4% from the field. Their opponents have averaged 76.0 points.

well we were colder than the weather....other than the last made 3 we were 4 for 25...lots of them were very good looks at critical times . and just when Duquesne got hot from 3. 4 turnovers each from Rubin and Reese.... Nick Anderson continues to look like a keeper....if we can keep him.

While disappointing that the shooting was cold, overall, I thought the boys did a pretty good job. I'm not surprised at all by the 4 turnovers by Reece and if you are, then get a reality check. That kid plays his heart out and has had his butt glued to the bench for years. The effort is so much better than it was in the first 10 games.
Moore is sooo missed.

I'm kind of dreaming of this starting lineup:
Moore
Love
Anderson
Rubin
Amos

Well, I guess there's a non-zero chance of that lineup starting together next year.
