LaSalle Explorers 7-15 (3-6) at Loyola Chicago Ramblers 5-18 (1-9) – 7:00pm CST, Gentile Arena, Chicago IL
The Ramblers, losers of 9 straight, host the LaSalle Explorers. LaSalle is winless against the Ramblers in 3 tries as members of the A10.
Friday night, the Ramblers continued their winless streak against VCU, losing 89-75. In the loss, Miles Rubin scored a career high 21 points and achieved his 6th double double of the season. The Ramblers led by as many as 15 in the first half, but it was not meant to be. With the loss, Loyola drops to 5-18 overall and 1-9 in the A-10.
La Salle travels to Loyola at 7-15 overall and 3-6 in A-10 play. The Explorers have dropped their last two games and face a 1-8 road record. La Salle ranks last in the A-10 in effective field goal percentage (.465), scoring offense (66.2), threes per game (5.1), and is alongside of us near the bottom nationally in offensive rating #330 and points per game #347.
The Explorers have had a very rough season so far. La Salle won just four of their first 10 games this year, and have now lost 9 of 12 coming into this matchup. The only victory in that time came versus Rhode Island on January 7. The next four were a 2-2 run with wins over St. Bonaventure and Dayton ahead of losses to Fordham and Saint Joseph’s.
Hosting Saint Joseph’s on Saturday, the Explorers lost 67-58. Rob Dockery was the only player on the team to finish in double-digits, notching a double-double on 26 points with 14 rebounds and five assists in the loss.
Jaeden Marshall leads the Explorers with 12.6 points per game. He has 14 games with at least 10 points scored this season, including four 20-point outings. Saint Joseph's held him scoreless last week, while Fordham held him to six. That was after back-to-back 20-point games vs. St. Bonaventure and Dayton. Jerome Brewer is second in scoring, averaging 11.8ppg on a pretty efficient 49 FG%.
Head coach Darris Nichols is in his first season leading the Explorers, coming from Radford where he led the Highlanders to two 20-win seasons over his 4-year tenure. He inherited a rebuilding situation at LaSalle and brings in a 97% new roster.
Not a whole lot of excitement leading into this matchup of A10 basement dwellers and offensively inept squads. LaSalle plays defense, Loyola does not. So, this matchup might be competitive and close.
LaSalle Probable Starters – 6-9 F Jerome Brewer, 6-6 G Rob Dockery, 6-2 G Jaden Johnson, 6-5 G Ashton Walker, 6-4 G Jaedon Marshall.
