The MVC's Fall Sports Previews are out, and here's how the Ramblers fared in different sport predictions: Men's Soccer: Loyola picked #1 Ramblers got 5 first place votes out of 7, Evansville and Missouri State picked 2nd and 3rd. Interestingly, as Valpo has joined the MVC, one of the league's top men's soccer programs of the past few years, SIUE, has bolted for the MAC (Akron is a really good soccer program in the national rankings most years in the past decade). So the league is likely to be a bit weaker this year. Women's Soccer: Loyola picked #3 Illinois State was picked first, snagging all but one of the 1st place votes, and Drake came in 2nd. Cross Country: Loyola men picked #4, Loyola women picked #5 The Ramblers are in the middle of the pack. Nine schools (all but Missouri State) compete in men's cross country; all ten schools compete in women's cross country. Women's Volleyball: Loyola picked #4 Missouri State was picked to win the league this year, followed by UNI and Illinois State. Loyola made its first appearance in the women's volleyball conference tournament last year-- only the top six out of ten teams make the tournament. The loss of Wichita State, a really good program, will make the league a little less impressive-- the MVC has had multiple bids to the women's volleyball NCAA tournament several times in the recent past. The Ramblers probably can't win the all sports trophy because Loyola doesn't field a baseball, tennis, or swimming team. But it would be nice to capture a few league titles in diverse sports.... the league is much more open without Wichita State, and now's the time to get out in front as a leader in the conference. |
