Wow...who will start ? interesting question.....kinda bumps up with how is he going to keep 7 new guys happy? Any of these guys have big egos and need to start to be happy? That was my biggest question yesterday is how are all these guys going to fit in. I do not think we have enough talent to dominate other Valley teams....we will have to play the system unselfishly and have our athleticism compliment that....but we have have 3 highly ranked incoming freshman,,,two jc guys that were top dogs on their teams and a guy who has put in a year.
But Krutwig, Ugauk, Williamson, Hall and CLemons would be the 5 I think Coach would like to see.....but I am going to say that Pipins gets the call over Hall.........and Hall is first guy in to replace well , anyone until Frank comes back. Marquis subs in for Clemson and Williamson.
If everyone buys in without egos they have a chance to do a lot of matchup stuff as they have a lot of guys with different skill sets.
My biggest concern coming out of yesterday is who is going to shoot the 3 other than Williamson.

Given their size I’m not sure we’ll start uguak and hall together; my guess is they’ll stagger their minutes at least at first so we always have some size out there. Tate’s tough tho.

Welch is quick, I def think he’s more of a four. And having any freshman playing out of position against the player of the year is gonna be a lil bumpy. I agree he looked a bit lost, but ultimately really talented. He shot the 3 once, missed, but it looked nice.

Kennedy has the chance to be a real stud, great cutting to the hoop and finishing around the basket. I also thought he played with some edge on defense and dove on bruno going for a steal. I don’t see a toughness problem for the team yet, lets get through the offseason without being too banged up.

Pipkins is quick and a better than expected passer. Had a sick spin move. Clemons is as advertised. Just rock solid all around; he should be a really steady presence. I’ve been high on wojcik since we got him, I just think he’s smart which will get him playing time. He had some nice finishes through contact around the rim which I didn’t expect tho.

Depth is a strength; no one looked overmatched, shooting is iffy but I think that’s gonna he case for all teams with the new line. Norris would be a huge addition to this squad, kids lights out from deep, really smooth. I think Kennedy’s the spark plug off the bench along with pipkins and wojcik. Biggest thing is figuring out who takes the shot late in games.

Did Norris apply for a waiver from the NCAA? Their method of granting those seems to be completely random, so it would at least be worth a shot.

I agree. Seems like you don't even need much of an excuse anymore.

I was hoping to see a bunch of glowing reviews about the scrimmage. It seems like the consensus is that we aren't going to be bad, but also there are a lot of question marks.

The best news out of all of this is that we can be hopeful for this season as it seems like we've got a lot of interesting new pieces that could pan out --- but more importantly... by the end of this season, we should know who is really good, what players work really well together, etc.... and when the season is over -- we should have those EXACT same pieces ( + Norris and Kaifus) and a great game plan to make 2020-2021 another break-out year.

I think my biggest take away from the scrimmage is that Cam is really really good and I think its hard to evaluate Welch when thats what hes going up against. There isnt a single player in the league that will be more of a challenge for him that Cam.

I don't want my posts to come across as negative. I saw a lot of things I liked. In fact, it was a lot better than some other early season practices I've seen over the years. The first time I went to one was before Turk's freshman year, and he was completely lost to the point where I didn't know if he would even play. There was another one where they were working on fast breaks with no defense, and almost every guy settled for a jumper from the free throw line. Terrible. (And who could forget Vlatko Granic?) But it all goes to show there's a lot of teaching to be done between now and March.

According to PM, they are waiting for an answer on a waiver appeal for Norris.

Toledo, from your prior post it sounds like you're tempering your heretofore lofty expectations for this year.

I'm cautiously optimistic for this year. We lost two conference players of the year and added 5+ new guys... My expectations for this year are still that we'll compete for a Valley regular season title and be in the hunt in the last two weeks.... but if we don't make the tournament this year (or "a" tournament), I'll understand that it was a tough road with all the roster subtraction and addition....

But, obviously, next year I expect us to be seasoned and ready to rip through the Valley and go back to the NCAA.
