On top of having their top scorer suspended and no longer enrolled in classes...

It seems that DePaul has some financial problems tied to their program. They have a $15 million annual deficit (up $4 since 2010).

On top of that, their head coach (who probably won't be their head coach for much longer) has an annual salary of $2.2 million, which would put him in the top 10 of all NCAA coaches Meanwhile, they continue to spend money like drunken sailors and are being helped out by the City (who is no stranger to "making it rain.")

So, while we may be highly disappointed with what has taken place at Loyola over the past 20 years, perhaps we should put it in perspective...at least we're not DePaul.

That place is a mess! In spite of our issues over the past 20 or so years, i will take our current situation any day over theirs. We are moving in the right direction ... they are not. Some feel that this new off campus arena in Chicago will be the solution to their problems ... not likely!!! $2.2m annual salary to Oliver Purnell for something like 6 conference wins over the past 3 years ... I wonder if they will ever agree to play us again?

$2.2 million for the head coach alone is more than the entire men's basketball budget at 6 out of 10 MVC schools. I was shocked when I saw DePaul in the top 10 highest expenditures of all men's basketball programs a year or two ago, but I assumed it was a one-year abberation (buying out a contract or something like that). They've since fallen to 27th, at $6.7 million on men's basketball for 2013, but still about $90k more than Illinois. But the Big East is a pricey league-- Georgetown ($10 mil), Marquette ($9.9 mil) and St. John's ($7.2 mil) spend more than DePaul, and 7 out of 10 teams spend more than $6 mil. The only reason three teams spend less than $6 mil is because those are the numbers for last year, and the three teams were in different leagues then (Xaver and Butler in the A-10, and Creighton in the MVC.)

TOO DARN BAD !! For decades they have had an exaggerated opinion of themselves --aided and abetted by the Chgo Media and Pols. The arrogance factor is now catching up to them--They are in over their heads --A pity--But they are so full of themselves that they would not see this coming or did not care--My nephew is a booster-big time--or I guess I should say, WAS. Has suspended his yearly which by my standards was hefty.
BTW, Butler is now reaping the same thing--as will Creighton shortly. (Creighton does have attendance, though--only game in town ( Nebr Omaha plays good Hockey as does Nebr Lincoln play good Football)
WE on the other hand have done it correctly--I know Fr G wanted better--maybe the A-Whatever--I do say, however, MVC is its equal-- Good business and Athletic move for us--We did not let PRIDE get in the way--I might add , what does De Pewl have to be proud of ?? Arrogance here for sure.

LUC will soon find itself as the best Hoops in Chgo --if not already.

Even when I was young , we were that school WAY up on the North-side while DePewl was the one in the real Chicago--So help me !!!

As far as their star player goes--DePEWL really did the right thing--Good on them. Won't help though--as they probably cannot even win in the Horizon--or would have trouble doing so.

Loyola has much work ahead of us on and off the court before we can declare ourselves #1 in town. DePaul has much work ahead of them. A new arena will not help them and it's a sore spot politically. Northwestern has a new coach in Chris Collins who has pulled off some surprising victories. UIC is in a sad shape but I have always believed they are the sleeping giant of the area, a large public University with an arena off the expressway system. Valpo is the closest to being #1 in the area currently.

Safe to say that the #1 in town title is a bit up for grabs.

Mike05 .Nice to see you at the game. Thanks for stopping.
This topic is interesting. Do not forget NU. Chris Collins is creating a stir up there and they are bringing in some Chicago kids next year ( Fenwick and St. RItas) Guess it doesnt pay to be a Catholic School.
It was nice to see the Trib have Fred Mitchell at the game and Dave Kaplan doing the game( for comcast sports I guess).
If it turns into a one on one battle I am not sure how it works out. I think the best bet is to join with someone. I have written probably a thousand times that I am a big fan of doubleheaders along with a high school game.
I think my first choice would be NU at the United Center. We would be 2nd billing but hey.....
My other thought is with UIC. I know ,,,,I know but we are in different conferences now maybe we can become a friendly rival that helps each other get some attention. A two day tournament at UIC (great location) before the Christmas season....How bout we throw Creighton and Iowa , UIC and Ramblers. Maybe same 4 womens teams play at the Gentile.
Anyway MIke05 have always been on the same page with UIC...all the ingredients....I am thinking they have been a commuter school for so long that like LU they have a small base of fans

You see, Guys--The Trib's resident fawner on matters DePewl writes as if Blue Demons aught to be able to win in the Big East !!!! Arrogance personified.
There never was a chance that these guys could win in that Conf--Being the Legends in their own minds as well as the Media's (Hough) that they STILL are, he thinks they should. Fat chance !
For years they "prospered" with Chicago recruits--Now they are not getting them--see article. Author even talks up PUBLIC funded Arena for them, and comments favorably on their AD's partnering the deal with the Pols---In other circles there is a name for that.

In any case case, this is another aid for LUC and Mild Kittys rise to be best in area. Milton and the boys are taking the first steps upward. I truly do not believe Ramblers will NOT waste it this time.

The DePEWL situation is a disgrace--I do not even care one iota. Funny thing--a friend of mine reminded me of Sully and his problems--I advised him that the difference was we were winning at the time and did not become involved with POLS. We are doing it ourselves albeit a tad late.

I'd say that is between us and Northwestern. DePaul and UIC are at rock bottom and won't be going anywhere anytime soon.
