Susan Malish is certainly using her skills as a VP and CIO to get things done in the Athletic Department.

I agree with 86.

With all due respect to Ms. Malisch , what skills did she acquire in her career as an information technologist that make her qualified to decide who should be the women's softball coach, or that Sheryl Swoopes should have her contract extended?

As an interim AD, her role should have been limited to seeing that the bills got paid, and the quotidian functions of the department got done. Hiring coaches should be left to the permanent AD.

On edit: I am going to have to backtrack a little about Ms. Malisch. Upon further research, I find that she does have a sports background. She was on the basketball team at Rockhurst, and was an assistant coach at Cal-State Northridge for 3 years before starting her IT career.

But I stand by my opinion that an interim AD should be a caretaker, and leave the hiring of coaches to a permanent AD unless there are exigent circumstances.

There's a big all Athletics meeting next Wednesday (the day before the golf outing) and Garanzini will be in attendance. I wouldn't be surprised if the new AD is introduced then.

If that's true, I wonder if the administration will be able to keep the lid on who the new AD is until then.

I doubt it.

I believe they are still interviewing this week. Think of the meeting next week more as a deadline. Sure, they may take longer, but it's good to set goals!

I am getting a bad feeling about this...

I hope I'm way off base, but could it be that Malisch herself will be named the permanent AD?

I don't have any proof, but here are some considerations that point in that direction:

1. She was on the Search Committee that selected Calhoun, so she's no novice about the politics of selecting an AD, and has been involved in the program for some time.

2. She has expressed an interest in returning to a career in sports.

3. She made several big personnel decisions as interim AD, which suggests she knew she was going to be named as the permanent AD, and wasn't concerned about being second-guessed or stepping on her successor's toes. The recent Tylka hire in particular suggests such foreknowledge.

4. There have been no other names floating about in the rumor mill.

5. The fact that the AD job posting on Loyola's website stayed up for over a month points to an in-house hire.

6. Lu86's post in this thread is instructive...

For what it's worth, I don't think this stays in house. Word is that there are several current AD's that expressed interest and applied for the job.

I can't speak to whether it's customary for an interim to make hiring decisions, but the decisions in question don't seem all that controversial to me. Extending a national champion, a women's basketball coach to give her four seasons, and promoting an asstant to coach softball all seem like moves anyone would make.

Also, you said, "There have been no other names floating about the rumor mill," but Malisch's name hasn't been floating around either, so really no names have been floating at all.

I'd advise some Pepto to ease your bad feeling.

Feel free to throw this post back in my face if Malisch is the choice.
