Well, since Porter is back at square one, I'm starting my personal dream list of who I'd like to see us hire:
1.) Robert Smith - HC at Simeon. And it's not even close. Landing him would be a huge coup for us, maybe reopen the doors to the CPL.
2.) Ronald Nored - AC, South Alabama. Former Butler player might help us in recruiting Indiana, and Porter loves him

Don't know if he'd take an assistant job with a head coaching job in his hometown, but it wouldn't hurt asking. 4.) Tony Barone Jr. - Director of Scouting, Memphis. The rumor was that PM was going to hire him when 2 years ago when he took this job. Sr. was his coach at Creighton. Maybe brings his brother Brian over from Green Bay as well. 5.) Matt Gordon - Director of Ops, LU. It's tough to fill 3 open spots this late in the game, maybe you throw your guy a bone and promote from within? 6.) Stew Robinson - AC, UIC. Would help us recruit Chicago and in Indiana (where he played). Would be nice to steal him from our cross town rival 7.) JR Blount - AC, Loyola South...er...St. Leo. A former player would be nice to bring back to the program. 8.) Dominic Okon - Director of Ops, Wichita State. Ditto former player, although it might be tough to lure him from a conference foe. 9.) James Farr - AC, Chicago State. Former Rambler assistant (hello Larry Farmer days), former Creighton teammate of Porter Moser... 10.) Rodell Davis - ??? Why not? It wasn't like he was a bad coach right?
Either way, LU needs some coaches with some clout in Chicago and Indiana. Maybe even bring in a big name from the pros like we did with Sheryl Swoops. Other thoughts?

We had a discussion after Davis, Gardner and Gates were hired. The question was were any of them capable of really helping the big men? Now with King and Johnson having a combined seven years of eligibility left, I really hope Coach Moser considers hiring someone who can help these two and the other "bigs" develop. Strong inside play will really help the team move up the ladder in the MVC.
Good list, lusuperfan. It might be too early to look at DaJuan Gouard, who just recently got the head coaching job at Danville Community College. I think Antoine Smith (I saw him on the train again last week) and Louis Smith might be other former player candidates who could help a bit if we have to call on someone to fill a vacancy quickly. Louis had some experience assisting at the high school level and playing professionally, and was a great defender with a very high basketball IQ.
Yeah, I agree with you about DaJuan. It'd be nice to get a former player back here, but I think it would be a little slimy for him to leave less than a month after he got that job. I forgot about Antoine and Louis. Does Antoine have any coaching experience? I know he could fit galena's description of a coach who can develop our front court; maybe if Gordon gets promoted, he could take over the Director of Basketball Operations job to get some experience.
Something in my gut tells me Blount doesn't come back cause of the "exodus" of Whitesell players to St Leo at the beginning of PM's tenure, but you never know.
I don't know what experience Antoine Smith has, other than running the benefit tournament that he holds for his brother. I brought him up because he developed into a pretty good fundamental player late in his career, and he fit that criteria about us needing someone to coach big men. In my opinion, it can never hurt to have a competent alum on staff to help players navigate through what it takes to balance school and sport at the particular institution. Looks good to have a former player dedicated to getting kids to graduation, and they can speak to the experience firsthand, too.
Good article, ahunte! I'm glad that Moser is wasting no time in making new hires. I definitely agree with him that to some extent, bigger programs poaching our assistants is a reflection of Loyola (PM) making good hires. I certainly hope that this is just a case of people finding better opportunities than a case of people jumping ship because crap is about to hit the fan. Also, on the bright side, perhaps PM and his assistants parted on good terms and PM will use some of the political capital he has garnered with his assistants to get schools like Northwestern and Memphis to put us on the schedule.
I was surprised that Gordon wasn't promoted right after Malnati resigned. Down to one assistant that has 2 years of college coaching experience. Watching over the last two years, Porter needs help during the game. Malnati was in his ear all last year. I'd guess it's Gordon because he knows the system and players, and would vote for some gray hair with the next guy.
It is kind of weird. The NU boards are talking like we are the minor league system for their asst. coaches. they are suggesting that one of their x-players Jitim Young get his feet wet at LU. He is a Gordon tech kid and was a tough son of a gun as a player. he hung around some of the NBA summer camps and played in Europe. But no coaching experience.
