Loyola or LU.
Until recently (2008 to be exact), we were the oldest Loyola University in the country and so we justified referring to ourselves as LU (even though there are several other Loyolas out there) Further, we had been traditionally referred to as Loyola (or LU) while the others were called "Loyola Maryland" "Loyola New Orleans" "Loyola Marymount."
That said, the Loyolas must have gotten together and agreed that no one school would be referred to as just "Loyola." Accordingly, we would be Loyola Chicago...not Loyola Illinois.
Interesting. What happened in 2008? The university reincorporated as Loyola University Chicago well before that. Back when two wire services (AP, UPI) dominated, one referred to us as Loyola (Ill.) and the other as Chicago Loyola in polls and scores. I think Loyola of Chicago was used most frequently in narratives. I followed the Ramblers from out of state for many years and I don't recall seeing them referred to as just Loyola nationally.
While we are on the topic, I want to support an annual MTE with the 3 DI Loyolas plus a Jesuit guest. The site would rotate. What fun it would be to see announcers trying to deal with it. Failing that, how about a Big Four event every year with LUC, DePaul, UIC, and Northwestern or Chicago State.
