For the moment at least, Tom Welch is leading the NCAA in field goal percentage.

Fun stat after 2 games and, in all sincerity, Tom Welch is the reason we are 2-0 right now instead of being 0-2 and everyone hitting the panic button. I think Welch, particularly with how much he’s improved this year, is going to be the key in determining whether our season is successful vs. unsuccessful. I also think his early success and foreseeable big minutes in the future is good for our younger guys to see what can happen if you stick around the program and don’t bolt after year 1.

If y’all are like me, you’re probably nervous for what’s gonna happen after watching these first two games. If you think about it though - we are in pretty good shape. Welch stepping up combined with the return of Kennedy is going to completely change the dynamic of this team, top to bottom. Having Norris, Kennedy and Welch out on the floor with Edwards is going to make us a much more veteran-looking group. Kennedy is going to free up Norris for 3s and take the load off him, the core rotation is going to get a little shorter and we won’t be leaning on our newcomers to try and do too much.

The question is - when are we going to see Kennedy back?

Last point on Welch - can we TRY to play him with Golden???? I know there’s a concern on defense, but if we can impose our will down low early, we’re gonna draw fouls and force the other team to adjust - especially when they’re smaller than us.

Tom has done a great job offensively...shooting and helping facilitate the offense. But he got pushed around by the UIC centers. It was visually easy to see. He also fouled out in 23 minutes. Golden had 4 fouls in 15 minutes. I think we are going to have to continue to mix and match depending on opposing teams center. Hutson looks lost in our offense and defense as we seem to run both at breakneck speed. Dont know if that is intentional or not.
Golden and Welch at the same time is intriguing but we would probably have to change offense and defense. Almost everyone except the bluebloods who can get 3 or 4 quality tall guys are playing some form of 4 guards or at least 4 capable ball handlers on the perimeter and screening up high with the center. I would like to see us play a zone some times if for no other reason than to slow the pace down and stay out of foul trouble.

We'll see how they look in Myrtle Beach. I'm just hoping they can get it together before the Depaul game. They have looked very polished and are playing great, while we've looking like a mess against some really inferior competition.

Saint Louis takes down Memphis. Blers will get a shot to win another one against the AAC for our conference if we can take down Tulsa.
