I think it might be possible that Drew took our defense for granted last year. With Lucas Aher and Tate, we had guys that not just gave 100% effort, but were really skilled on defense. They understood what they were doing and were able to stay with players without fouling. The thing we lacked last year was consistent scoring. As a result, this offseason he brought in guys not really known for defense, but moreso guys that could score. Sheldon is a great shooter but not known for playing defense. Bryce averaged a decent amount of points in a good league but isn't a rim protector. The freshman brought in all seemed to have a great offensive game in high school but none of them were known for being a lockdown defender. Drew thought the system in place was enough to have a great defense, which clearly isn't the case. There's been talk of learning the system, but guys getting blown by 1 on 1 doesn't have anything to do with that, that's just bad defense. You can preach effort and intensity on defense all you want, but a bad defender giving 100% is still a bad defender. We lost extremely skilled defenders without replacing them, and the result is glaring.
