Loyola makes their first of two appearances against the league's pre-season favorite on Tuesday night in Dayton. The Flyers were one of the youngest teams in college hoops last year and were the best team left out of the NCAA field. This year they've brought everybody back from last year's team and started the season nipping at the bottom of the AP ranks, but have fallen prey to the injury bug.

Star players Kobe Elvis and Malichi Smith were injured in a loss to BYU at the Battle 4 Atlantis and have missed 12 and 14 games this season respectively; top bench player Koby Brea has missed six games. While their guards and bench relief players were out, the Flyers had long stretches of scoreless minutes while looking tentative on offense and on their heels defensively. The Flyers have lost every top 100 KenPom game in their non-con schedule, and lost road games to George Washington and Rhode Island without their full group of guards. They also suffered a one-point home loss to VCU after giving up a huge double-digit lead. As of their game against Richmond on Saturday, however, Coach Anthony Grant has finally got his starting lineup and top reserves back in the rotation, and it showed-- UD routed the Spiders 86-60 after leading by 30+ for much of the second half. Yep, they’re all back and playing well just in time for Loyola.

Tuesday night’s starters for Coach Grant are likely to be: A-10 preseason player of the year, 6'10" sophomore forward DaRon Holmes II (18.3 ppg, 8.0 rpg); 6’8” junior forward from Belgium, Toumani Camara (12.7 ppg, 8.6 rpg); 6’6” sophomore forward RJ Blakney (7.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg); 6’2” sophomore guard Kobe Elvis (10.1 ppg, 3.1 rpg); and 6’0” sophomore point guard Malachi Smith (6.0 ppg, 5.5 apg). Holmes is deservedly getting NBA draft discussion—he leads the A-10 in field goal percentage, blocks, and free throw attempts. Camara leads the league in total rebounds. Smith had 13 assists against 1 turnover on Saturday against Richmond.

Notable players off the bench are defending A-10 sixth man of the year Koby Brea, a 6’6” sophomore guard (6.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg); Mike Sharavjamts, a 6’8” freshman forward from Mongolia (6.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg); and 6’10” sophomore forward Mustapha Azmil (10.0 ppg, 5.0 ppg). These three players would start on just about every other team in the A-10, and they play nearly starters minutes at Dayton. Brea is shooting 44.1% behind the arc. Sharavjamts is 6’8” but plays a point forward role, mostly on the perimeter—he’s averaging 3.1 assists per game and most of his shots are from distance, where he shoots 31.9%. Azmil, at 6’10”, has the second most made three-pointers on the team (hitting 34.6%), averages 2.0 assists, and gets to the free throw line a lot (where he shoots 77.9%).

The Ramblers are coming off another second-half collapse, this one at the hands of Duquesne. After leading 40-31 at halftime, Loyola was held to only 18 points in the second half and were outscored by 23. In conference play this season, Loyola has only outscored their opponents in the second half once (the win over St. Bonaventure). In their eight conference games, the Ramblers have been outscored in the second half by an average of 11.1 points per game. Will some days off help?

Dayton leads the league in attendance (by almost a factor of 2) at 13407, so the Ramblers should be prepared for a big, loud, and boisterous crowd. The Ramblers are 15-33 against Dayton in a series that goes back to 1929 but has been dormant since a 59-56 Loyola win at UD Arena on February 27, 1993. The Flyers left the Midwestern Collegiate Conference for the Great Midwest in 1993-94; they joined the A-10 in 1995.

I'm not sure how we plan to contain Holmes down low. I think we just need to collapse on him and hope UD isn't hitting from deep. We do not have a big guy who can really go up against him 1v1.

I do hope Hutty gets some good minutes. Think I've seen enough of Golden for a bit. Time to start thinking about the future.

I remember when the Ramblers were soundly beaten by Dayton in the 1962 NIT tourney. They couldn't handle the big Dayton center, Bill Chmielewski.

I remember when the Ramblers soundly beat Dayton, at Dayton, in January, 1964. They were able to handle the big Dayton center, Henry Finkel.

Been awhile since I went into a game feeling like we had zero chance, but here we are. Not great.

But maybe we turn back the clock to 1964.

Already at the point where I watch the game calmly, cheer and get loud where appropriate, always hoping for the win, but don't get too heavily invested in the loss.

Kinda the way I felt when we first joined the MVC. Just rolling with the punches at this this stage.

Hanging around. But man, if Alston can get his FTs going, he'd really be unstoppable. That 0-2 trip followed by an easy UD bucket was a big swing.

Can anyone explain how that was Dayton ball? Foul on Welch and then double technicals. They shot the foul shots and then both sets of technicals. Since Dayton shot the 2 for the foul, shouldn’t it have been Loyola ball???
