The NIT Bracket after Day 1

Post by JCT »

Of the first 16 games in the NIT, the higher seed (and home team) won only 7 of the games. And 3 of those 7 were a 4-seed that beat a 5 seed.

- Every 6 seed beat every 3 seed.
- Three of the four 2 seeds were out in the first round.
- Cal-Bakersfield upset #1 seed Cal in Berkeley.

One seed ISU handily beat UC Irvine, but the only 2 seed to hold on was Illinois, in ISU's section of the bracket. If ISU beats Central Florida and Illinois holds serve against Boise State, it will be U of I at Redbird Arena for a chance to go to NYC for the NIT Final Four. That will be quite a game for ISU, if they can get there.

Wouldn't that be something. Big, bad U of I would have to go to Redbird...a place they have seemingly vowed to never go.

I care. I would love to see a Valley team knock a Big 10-14 team out of the tourney.

Well, sure, for a couple of reasons. First, it'd be good for the MVC to have ISUr have a deep run in the NIT. To that end, it also could hurt future scheduling if U of I goes to ISUr and gets smoked. Conversely, maybe it shows that some mid-majors are a good schedule.

Much to watch other than Hawkins doing his best Johnny Manziel impersonation

I want them to win, but I am not rooting for them. If that makes sense.

I'll root for the Shockers.
