I haven't seen anything else to support it anywhere, but Community College of Baltimore County has a point guard named Brandon Fields who averaged 9.8 assists and 7.3 points per game.

There's also another PG at a different CCBC (Catonsville), who's higher scoring and had a D1 verbal commit before going juco because of family issues....

The Catonsville guard, Quinton Jackson, left the team midseason to transfer to U. of Pikeville, an NAIA school, according to this article: http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/sports ... /21560195/

I doubt if a basketball vagabond like Jackson would be on Porter's radar, eligibility questions aside.

As for the Dundalk guy you mentioned, his assists are impressive, but he can't shoot, hitting in the 20s% on 3s and under 50% on freebies. I think his teammate Malachy Onwudiegwu better fits Porter's recruiting profile.

The real problem is that ANY available Maryland junior college point guard is a recruiting stretch and a head scratcher.

I was trying to put a non-judgmental or more positive framing on it, but I had some of the same thoughts. Custer is a coup and seems like a perfect fit. I'm pretty satisfied with having White, Richardson and Doyle doing most of the ball handling and offensive quarterbacking next year, and I don't know why we would go for a juco point guard as something of a one-year stop gap measure when there are forwards and shooting guards (who need the underclassmen years more for development) available. Maybe every one of the potential names we've come up with are wrong, or maybe the stats are misleading and there's a deeply buried diamond out there, but I don't see it right now. Last year was like a series of worst case scenarios with injuries (White, Doyle, James, Thomas each missing games), the Marlon Jones non-qualification, four frontcourt guys bolting, etc., and we ended up having our best season in 30 years.

Last year we had 7 guards, and we currently only have 5 for this year. What would happen if White and Doyle both get hurt or sick again? You'd have Peterson, Richardson, and Turk all playing 35+ minutes.

Whether it's a PG or SG, Juco or HS, I think we need another guard.

The two guards we lose are Crisman and Dokubo, who were averaging a combined 16 mpg and 2.0 points over the last 10 contests despite being seniors. Any juco guard coming in is going to be far behind Doyle, Peterson, Turk, Richardson, and White on the depth chart. For the first half of their first season (1/4 of their D1 career), an incoming juco probably won't be significantly above walk ons on the depth chart. I'm not crazy about juco guards unless they're as exceptional as Peterson has certainly turned out to be-- and even he had an inconsistent first 5-6 games at the D1 level. A HS guard would be worth it, because they'd have a whole season to get ready to help replace Peterson, Turk, or White after next year as Custer comes in, and there wouldn't be two 1/2 season learning curves over four years.

They are trying to get the best player they can but need to have someone who has the ability to contribute this year.

well, tonite is the basketball dinner on campus and I will be sure to ask around as to why there has not been an announcement.
Kind of embarrassing at this point.

I don't really consider it embarrassing per se. We've had the Custer transfer announcement, which is very positive. We had an annoucement on November 13 of the Adgei and Kirby signings in the early signing period-- although Roosevelt Smart bailed out on his verbal (clearly embarrassing). What may be even more embarrassing than Smart's snub of Loyola is the fact that his only known offer since re-opening his recruiting has been from Western Kentucky-- a team that finished with a lower RPI and tied for 4th in a weaker conference.

Last year there were several announcements in and around the spring signing period:

April 16: Announcement of Knuth, James, and Peterson signings.
May 12: Announcement of Marlon Jones LOI.
June 17: Announcement of Rajala addition.

Officially, the regular (spring) signing period this year goes through May 20.

I think I'll withhold any further speculation until I hear what streak learned at the dinner.

Just got back from a great dinner.

I approached all three sources and they all affirmed their original statements.

It will be a JUCO guard from the Baltimore area.

The amount of eligibility left is being confirmed. Everything is in process and there should be an announcement within 24-48 hours. But the signing has taken place.

And just to affirm, these are outstanding sources. They don't get any better than they could be. One is extremely high up in the decision process.

So my nervousness was not justified. Also this one source has NEVER steered me wrong because they know I would never give out too much information before the actual announcement.

On a sidebar note, there was a great highlight video at the end of the evening. PM gave a great presentation. Also the three seniors, London, Christian and Joe all gave nice presentations.

They did a live feed of the volley ball game during dinner. Saw Loyola win the first two sets versus Ohio State. The Ramblers eventually prevailed and beat Ohio State 3 sets to one and play Lewis in Romeoville Friday night for the MIVA championship. Lewis won the two meetings during the season to give the Ramblers their only losses.
