I'm really getting sick of the Porter should be fired stuff. If Porter was fired today he would still leave the program better than how he inherited it with a bunch of mediocre D2 talent. The guy put up 20+ wins last year with a team nobody thought could do anything on the valley and was picked to be at the bottom. If you objectively look at this team, it boils down to this -- We are a capable big man away from being at the top of this league.

Guys have played down this year but this is still a team with talent. We didn't get the big man we needed in the past two years of recruiting... That doesn't make Porter a bad coach -- it makes him a coach that didnt get it done on the recruiting trail to secure an important piece we needed. That sucks--but I don't think it makes him a "bad coach." Be careful what you wish for... You want a new coach? Who do you want ? Who do you think we could get that could take us to the top of the league next year or the year after? The incomplete team at all positions this year should be a red flag after this season, but I think you have to give him a chance to correct the problem after this season. But until then ... Let's see if he can right the ship going into arch madness and what he can get us for next year. Back-to-back seasons like this, and I'll gladly jump on the bandwagon. But some people on here have short memories and forget that Porter is the first coach since the mid-80s to lead us to a post season -- then won it. He gave us the most successful season we've had in 30 years. Everyone reading this ... Sit back, close your eyes, and think about who you were and what you were doing 30 YEARS AGO. THATS how long it's been since we had as successful season as last year! It's a miracle with how bad this program has been and how hard the administration has made it for a Loyola basketball team to be successful that someone could get 23+ wins in a season.

I just don't want to run off someone who I think is capable only to relapse into the cellar. I don't think Porter is a genius or the best coach in the league, but I do think he has passion for what he's doing and is capable of winning with the right pieces. I would be afraid of what we might end up with if we sent him packing.

Well said Toledo Rambler. I agree with your analysis. Do we really want to have another coach and a mulligan year and all that glad crap again.
Porter did give us the most successful season in thirty years and the impact of not having an AD for a eight months did have an impact. The athletic department was leaderless and PM had to fight through a lot of crap behind the scenes. Doe anyone really think the thirty years of mediocrity was due to coaching. To some extent "yes" but for the most part it was leadership at the top. Porter gave us a 24 win season in spite of no leadership from a vacant AD chair.
How quickly people forget. Only my late mother I think said it better when she once told me about how fickle people can be.
"Remember Jesus rode in on a mule to a cheering adoring crowd. By the end of the week he had been strung up on a cross."

Well, folks it must be me that Ramb and 25 are unloading upon--but if they are I plead half guilty--IF these people are to be fair, I would ask them to check my recent posts where I DO take the Admin to task. I say again it is their fault that we are NOT in the upper eschelon as are X Marq GTN and the rest as we were . IF the ADMIN had or will in future come through , I doubt Coach Porter would be the one as Coach. To use one of the critics own words ---"We were big man short" To be sure we won 24 games ---against what ?? Good record --YES-- But NOT against teams that LOYOLA of CHICAGO should be beating. We lacked size and always have in PM's regime
This is all I have been preaching--That is one of the weaknesses he has ==Has many good points which have been reported upon--BUT just not good enough.
His one fine season and it was good against just fair competition is not good enough at least for me. Our team's poor showing this year to date is on him !!

Sorry guys, I plead once again HALF -GUILTY--- We were good to a point last year--BUT what have we done lately ??? That is what pays off. Our Admin is the guilty party.
If they get their act together it should be done without PM

Even though the outcome was very little in doubt after Doyle's third foul and the technical, I did take two positives away from the game. First, that half the points were scored by the sophomores. They will have to step up if the team is going to have any success next year. The second was offensive rebounds. The team finally got a decent number last night. I know 86 has written that Coach Moser's philosophy is to get everyone back on defense. I get very frustrated when I see Loyola put up a shot from the outside, the majority of which are missed, and there are only two or three of the opposition there to get the rebound.
Loyola basketball was much more exciting when Martin, Hunter, Rouse, Sappleton, Moore, Goodman, Sprewer, Young, Polka and others were fighting for every rebound.

As one of the more pessimistic voices on this board I'll build off Brot's post with the following points.

Both sides (pro keeping Porter and pro 86ing Porter) have valid points.
Pro Keeping Porter: He has improved the program as a whole in 5 years. He had a great season last year. He's had some setbacks that sometimes weren't his doing. He might legitimately be the best coach available for Loyola right now, and the next person to come through the door if we fire Porter might be taking the program 2 steps back.
Con: He has a win percentage well under .500 here, including some horrendous seasons. Not only has he never had a winning record in conference play at LU, PM's career conference winning percentage at Loyola is an absolutely abysmal .247 with last night's loss. Recruiting, while improved, has been hit-or-miss. This team is legitimately under-performing, not the best thing in a what-have-you-done-for-me-lately business. New AD & admin might want to turn a page.

Either way, the next month or so will be very telling. I think LU has to go at least 6-5 with a Arch Madness win or 2 to salvage something of this season. If they do, I would probably give him just 1 more year and even then, there's no doubt he goes into the 16-17 campaign with the hottest seat in the MVC. NIT or get fired.
