I don't care how fabulous we look making athletic plays--- I WANT TO WIN. And I think we have to be SMART, DELIBERATE, and HARD WORKING to win at our level. Pretty is ugly if you're a loser.
Channeling Ed Jucker?
I think it's simpler than SMART, DELIBERATE, HARD WORKING. It's just SMART.
HARD WORKING is always SMART. DELIBERATE is smart only sometimes. SMART is always pushing the ball up the court to try to find something before the defense is set. You can do that deliberately. We did that against SIU. We kept the pressure on, got the rhythm, and the confidence built from there. We beat a team that was obviously questioning itself after three straight losses and we didn't give them a lot of time to figure their way out of it. Meanwhile, we were shooting over 50%. A lot of that flows from confidence. Brot (I think) and I are not exactly advocating Paul Westhead/Loyola Marymount style. No championships there. "Be quick but don't hurry" - worked well for John Wooden.
My other two cents: I'm in the camp that says these players have never ever duffed it. The effort has been terrific all season. Just look at the defense.
