First congrats to Mike Smith on his commitment using basketball to get into a school like Columbia is always a great decision. He would have been a solid player for us but I am not too disappointed in missing out on him. I would rather us go for a grad transfer at Pg to fill the back up role this year. This will allow us to get Evan Gilyard from Simeon or Elijah Joiner from Curie as I am big on both of them. For the grad transfer I don't know many of the ones available but I was thinking Mike LaTulip from Illinois would be a possibility. He didn't play much at all but I think he would be an option to step in a transition year.

Dartmouth is the Drake of the Ivy League.

But Drake is the Harvard of the midwest...(or so they say)

I should have qualified my claim that Smith wouldn't be admitted but for basketball. But I think the odds would be against him.

I'm a little surprised the lower range of acceptable act scores at Ivy League schools is as low as it is. My pair of treys was a better hand than I thought.

Yea my bad.......but there are Columbia students getting in with 30,s I would not consider this making an accept ion.

Columbia just hired a new men's basketball coach. Former coach Kyle Smith left on March 30 to become the head coach at San Francisco. Columbia announced yesterday it had hired Jim Engles to take the helm.

Of course the $64, 000 question is whether this will cause Mike Smith to reopen his recruiting.

Exactly. Players don't tend to go to Ivy schools for the coaches...they go because it's an Ivy school.

The Ivy League used to have a policy of no scholarships, so I got curious. I remember they made changes to try and become more competitive... The teams in the league don't dole out scholarships like schools in other conferences, but I found this from a 2011 NY Times article:

Quote:
The Ivy League does not award athletic scholarships, but led by endowment-rich members like Harvard, Yale and Princeton, the conference has spent hundreds of millions of dollars in additional need-based aid — with most of the universities all but eliminating student loans and essentially doubling the size of grants meant for middle-income families.
