Subhuman,
You might want to update your signature, since the Infinity Coaches Challenge is kaput. Maybe you can switch to the looney tune libertarian signature you use on the MVC board, something about government not solving problems but subsidizing them. And unemployment insurance being a prepaid vacation for freeloaders. You might be to the right of Cigarboy, which is scary crazy.

As for your defense of Marshall, it pretty much boils down to your assertion that the game was so poorly officiated as to pose a danger to the Shocker players, and that Marshall's tantrum was motivated soley by a selfless desire to protect his players, and that his actions were rationally calculated to achieve that end. You concede that perhaps a better alternative would have been for Marshall to pull the players off the court (and forfeit a meaningless exhibition game), but that the tantrum worked as well.

First, if you look at the video of Marshall's meltdown, it's clear there is nothing calculated about it. Marshall obviously has anger management issues and lost all control. The pasty-faced prick showed his true colors, and it wasn't pretty.

Second, your whole argument about Marshall protecting his players assumes that after his tantrum the players would be safer, presumably because the refs would call the game closer. Maybe. But what about the Canadian fans? I don't think it's at all a stretch to argue that Marshall's antics might rile up some fans to the point that they might pose a threat to the Shocker players. A beer bottle flying out from the stands comes to mind. But I'm sure Marshall considered this and determined ,on balance, his tantrum would provide greater safety for his players.
I just wish some Canadian cop would have been on scene to taser Marshall during his tirade. It would have been fun to see Marshall flopping around on the ground soiling his shorts!

Sub, I take it you don't feel the suspension and apology were necessary?

To illustrate this point, here's a follow up article.

I didn't watch the game, but if what Sub said is true (and I believe it is) then I understand part of his tirade. As a coach you have to watch out for the player's well-being. The whole thing was probably not calculated, but the beginning was. My guess is someone said something back to him, and that's what pushed him to what we see.

He didn't want to pull his team off the court because he's a fighter. It's a younger team, and I think they need to learn to fight and not just lay down. Apparently the team was playing poorly before this tantrum. He was not only defending the players, but showing them that you can't just quit in the middle of a fight. Baker and Co. already knew this. The young team they have now needed to learn this, and I think they got the message LOUD and clear. What was the worst part for me is what happened when he left the court.

As stated in ahunte's follow up article, McGill's Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation Marc Gelinas said, "There was another blowout, similar to what happened on the court. He became quite aggressive. Foul language, nose-to-nose with one of my staff. My staff was not pushed or hit or anything like that. I’m not saying that. The attitude was quite aggressive, quite intimidating, using foul-language. Aimed at a staff who did not take part in the decisions on the court, in terms of the referee decisions.” All that because he wanted to watch the game and was probably told he had to leave due to the ejection.

At that point, it isn't about protecting your players or firing up your team. To me, that's when he crossed the line and why he deserves the one game suspension.

To take Tank's argument about Marshall wanting to teach his team a lesson a step further, maybe his attempts to get at the refs were just a drill to teach his players how to box out...

Swella has it correctly as usual. Greg IS what he is--Thank Heavens my sons did not "play" for him. To compare tough and REAL coaches--marshall vs IRELAND !! A more dictatorial and narcissistic Coach hardly ever walked side court as did George Ireland--The players respected and PLAYED for him--He had no anger problems--His players RESPECTED him as he did them. Like him ?? Probably not--BUT he won and won some more--ALWAYS without having Egan or Miller et al having to restrain him. And guess what, he stayed on side court !!
I do NOT think this will go away soon !

Again SWELLA was right !!

I know that if it were my team's coach doing that at an exhibition game in another country to referees in training (and my own team's players, assistants, etc.), I'd be terribly embarrassed.

1. Marshall, who is portrayed as a totally calculated genius in these matters (scheduling, training, getting his players into mindsets, establishing a prevailing attitude, infusing a competitive "play angry" spirit, knowing the right level of competition to have down to research on opposing players, etc.) If he's such a mastermind, such a genius, such a shrewd assessor of situations like this, shouldn't he have known that if he was going to Canada to play he could expect questionable refs, and should have prepared accordingly? Or not taken that trip, and gone somewhere else?
2. Notice his team was losing on the scoreboard when he lost all reasonable control. Not ahead by only 5 points against a Canadian team making a run, not ahead by 10 points against a Canadian team but realizing that the refereeing was causing a "safety hazard" for his players, not winning by 15 or 20 points as he should against a Canadian team but nevertheless realizing that the inexperience of the referees might lead to a situation where one of his players could be injured. He was losing--- down by 4 points in an exhibition to a foreign team from a country not known for being especially good at basketball. And that's what made him temporarily insane and violent against novice referees in another country where they must now undoubtedly consider Americans to be inherently, genetically, pathologically violent and crazy.
3. We've seen glimpses of this before. People who are transfixed by the brilliance and infallibility of Head Coach Gregg Marshall often portray his temper and simmering anger as "intensity." But there have been times where he's been physical with his own players, nearby equipment, and anyone who gets into the way when he wants to charge at somebody to scream at them so "intensely" as to intimidate them physically.

I read some of the excuses and backstories invented to explain away this episode on mvcfans.com and Shockernet. I am honestly saying these excuses and the convoluted pretzel-logic denials of clear facts and events on video actually makes me frightened for the future of the world-- no really. Clear and unambiguous facts are now denied with regularity so that people don't have to admit any fault or mistake or error in judgment whatsoever. These kinds of refutations and re-inventions and denials of facts are so prevalent in so many areas of society today, it really is scary. Just admit it was wrong, remember that Marshall has shown this kind of thing before, see if he needs help to address it so it doesn't become a bigger problem in the future, and issue apologies. Why is admitting that you've made a mistake, you're at fault, and announcing that you're going to address the situation such a big problem? No one is asking him to resign, they're just asking him to apologize, take a suspension, and get help if he needs it to not embarrass, injure or kill someone in the future.

Well stated, JCT!
Wanna bet Marshall steers clear of the "Play Angry" rhetoric this year? Or maybe he's like Trump and can't help himself.

Schools such as our VALLEY partners, most of which have a long long tradition of Collegiate HOOPS should NOT have to put up with marshall and his nonsense !!

The VALLEY IS a more physical playing type of Conference than most BUT not in his way--It does not need the likes of him--
The deal here is that WSU really should look into him and his conduct--Much as we did with SWOOPES !! But that is their business and maybe the VALLEY'S , not mine.

Good for JCT and SWELLA !! AM in total agreement with both--"cept for their POLITICS of course--For the record I do NOT like Trump either--That is for another board"

First of all congratulations to the officials for maintaining their composure while Marshall acted like a juvenile. And if he was in a teaching moment he is a poor teacher. TV and the overall emphasis on sports has created too many prima donnas....welcome to the group Coach Marshall.

I have no problem with the apology and suspension and never said otherwise. I'm saying that the game was out of hand and he let them know. This wasn't about a game being physical, as Wichita is fine playing a physical game. It was about being mauled on one end with no call and breathing on someone on the other and it being called. We knew the officiating wouldn't be great and be a little one sided as that happens on all of these trips. But when safety becomes an issue, something needs to be done.

Tank said things very well. He has a young team that needs to learn to fight and Play Angry, pulling them off the court wouldn't do that. I also said that the officials did change after that and started calling the muggings as fouls and McGill adjusted and stopped being overly physical because they were no longer getting away with it. I have nothing against McGill, you play how the officials call the game, but that play led to some unsafe situations that weren't being addressed.

I'm just saying that other Valley fans are blowing this way out of proportion. There have been a lot worse blowups in basketball over the years and there will be worse than this to come. If those officials were in training, I hope they don't get employed to do regular season games as they were terrible. I've officiated for a number of years and if you call a game like that, you better be ready for the consequences.

As far as fans being a danger to players, I don't think that was a concern about the 10's in attendance.

To summarize yet again, he had every reason to be pissed and let the officials hear it. He went a little too far but other Valley fans are trying to make it bigger than it was and MVC fans are the only ones still talking about it.

And to swell, I'm sorry if the thought of small government and personal responsibility is upsetting to you. But that's on you.
