Had a chance to see our 6'9 recruit last night.
Observations:
1. Big,strong body.
2.Passes real well
3. Puts the ball up quickly under the rim.
4.Mid range game- not good.
5.Free throw shooting- average at best.
6. Moves quickly up and down the court.
7. Good leader and good basketball smarts
8. I talked to the opposing coach after the game who said"He will struggle somewhat at the college level."
9. Overall,I liked what I saw.It will be nice to have a quality big man on the team.

Nice report! Did the opposing coach say why he'll struggle at the next level...?

Saw highlights from the game so curious to see if he gave a reasons or if it came off as more just sour grapes. Certainly they'll be an adjustment period for him given that his size will no longer be a huge advantage. I look forward to see his passing down the line. I've seen some clips of him, he can really whip that ball with accuracy.

couple of thoughts.....the Ramblin Ray was pretty much right on with what I saw. I have seen the big guy 4 times now and get the local paper. This year he has seldom been the leading scorer......which kind of goes with bball smarts and good passer and I would throw in that he has little ego...glad to help the team win. I have seen him have good games from mid-range as well as have some good games from the line...not sure what overall average is. Just for reference....the team Jacobs beat was not in their conference so not sure how familiar he was. I will ask a couple of the coaches in the FVC and see what they have to say.
Jacobs also beat Sullivan the CPS closest to LU 69-17 Yikes!

The opposing coach was referring to the fact that his tallest players were 6'2" going against the 6'9" Krutwig. He feels that he will have much more trouble going against D1 big guys, not to say that he won't eventually be successful, but not right off the bat.
As far as his free throws,I think he was like 6 for ten- that's what I meant by average.

Bottom line- a very good addition for Loyola next year.

Thanks to those who have seen him play and have reported back. Nice to hear firsthand accounts.

The way I feel about big men is if they love playing and have a reasonable skill level, they will probably be effective. At 6'9 250 or whatever Krutwig is, all you have to do is be willing to fight for position and get rebounds -- even in the MVC. If you can make free throws, you're golden.

I am naive and not very knowledgeable about recruits. I can't really tell from watching a very good, moderately hyped high school kid playing against other high school kids if they're a Power 5 level recruit, a mid major or low major... or non-D1 for that matter. So I'm putting this question to our recruiting guys: How does Krutwig compare to someone we missed out on, like Sean O'Mara. The coach saying Krutwig is going to struggle at the D1 level made me think of O'Mara.

O'Mara was listed as 6'9" at the time we were recruiting him, I believe. He's now listed as 6'10". We were all saying to each other during his recruiting frenzy that he would be the kind of player who would make an instant difference for us. I was saying that he probably wouldn't play much at Xavier, at least the first year, because he was behind Matt Stainbrook. Well, here it is two years after Stainbrook graduated, and O'Mara is averaging 5.8 ppg and 3.1 rebounds playing less than 14 minutes per game. The big minutes in the frontcourt are going to 6'9" Rashid Gaston, a graduate transfer from Norfolk State.

Sure, if O'Mara was playing for us, by necessity, he'd be playing 25 minutes per game, probably averaging about 9 points per game and getting about 4.8 rebounds if I can extrapolate from his performance with Xavier. That would be nice, and a key part of the puzzle for us, but it wouldn't be much better (or better at all) than Aundre Jackson being on the floor. So how does Krutwig compare to 2013 Sean O'Mara?

If you think that Kirby playing 20 minutes would benefit us, I think you have to conclude that O'Mara playing 20 minutes would also benefit us. It's more than just Jackson vs O'Mara. A guy like that would create mismatches for the other 3-4 spots and open things up for our bigger guards and Donte just by being there and being a credible threat.

JCT,

Have not seen Krutwig play so I cannot compare him to O'Mara. I do think that if O'Mara was playing in the MVC his numbers would better than what you projected. His lack of quickness limits him significantly in the Big East. It wouldn't be as big of a factor in the MVC.

The times I have seen Krutwig play he has not played against any comparable post players and the FVC is not what I would call a great high school basketball conference. Most times I have seen him the other team has tried to double team him in the post and he has been pretty good at finding the open man. He does take up a lot of space !!!!
Those of you in the area should go out and see him play. Not to far...nice school, lots of restaurants near by. nothing like a high school basketball game.
