Porter wins COY in somewhat convincing fashion over Medved and Hinson. Congrats Coach! Well-deserved!

Would’ve been a crime if he didn’t win. Well earned for building this team and program into what it is. Congrats to Porter

So... only one thing left for us to win now, right?

Gotta be a HUGE vindication that he didn't really expect. He signed on at Loyola with no idea whatsoever that he would end up in the MVC again. No one had any idea in 2011 that it would be possible in any way. Maybe he thought he'd get to coach a game back at Redbird arena and maybe get a shot at getting an I-told-you-so win over ISU... but getting back into the league and winning a conference title? No way.

Also, for the many MVC fans who wrote him off as good recruiter/bad coach... time for a mea culpa.

I have to confess that I was not at all a Porter Moser fan until the 2014-15 season, when I thought he did a brilliant job constructing a winning mid-major philosophy and template for recruiting. I had a few doubts last year with some playing time issues, but he's been able to correct it this year. Just a fantastic job all the way around, including going beyond his job description on building attendance, PR, and other little things. He's got foresight, strategic thinking, great analytical skills, and he's hired and mentored some good assistants.

And things are lining up so he's able to use a successful template while systematically raising the level of the recruits who execute it. Think of the on ball defender component of his team philosophy.... He started off with Joe Crisman. Then Ben Richardson came in to fill that spot. Now Lucas Williamson is ready to be that piece of the puzzle. In each case, the next guy has stepped up the athleticism and physical abilities of the guy before. He's done that similarly with Christian Thomas, Montel James, and Aundre Jackson in that power forward role.

What we've witnessed under Moser is a lot like what Butler did under Barry Collier... creating a template and philosophy to follow, while always upgrading the talent in each role. It's part of building a solid program, and not just the product of a coach who is able to recruit great talent alone.

I’m glad Milton Doyle got a taste of success with the CBI win, but part of me is sad he doesn’t get to be part of all the success we’ve had this year despite being a huge part of this culture transformation. Hopefully he knows his contributions and efforts that paved the way for our resurgence does not go unappreciated.

By the way, our buddy Teddy was on ESPN a minute ago and said he doesn't think Porter is long for LU. Probably one more year but that he'd then get high major offers.

Saw this tweet from Custer back at Milt after he congratulated Custer on POTY.
